Does anyone like the idea of a question of the day quiz thread. The idea being you post a question on any subject. Post an image to identify the object or car part or post part of a songs lyrics for the other members to guess. The person who gets the right answer then posts the next question. If we avoid google then it could be fun and keeps people coming back to the site. If a question doesnt get answered after 2 days then the answer is given and a new question is posed.

Here is one to start you off :-

Why are medicine balls called medicine balls ?

I like the idea of obscure questions a lot :)

Can only imagine it was for health reasons - medicinal exercise.... But that seems too obvious.

Your slightly warm and the medicinal exercise has some truth to it. Its more to do with how and why the were invented.

I'm sure between all the members we have a lake full of useless information.

Most of the things I know mate are almost entirely useless, but it's a really big pile of useless information, so I'm with you there! :D

How and why eh? Well, I know they were invented a very long time ago, as they featured in the original Greek Olympics. However... the steaming great pile of **** knowledge runs out at that point on the subject of medicine balls, so it's someone else's turn.

They date back to ancient Greece and other areas of the world had similar inventions but the term medicine ball is more recent and dates back to the 1800's.

Yep I agree there is no other meaning other than they were used for medicinal treatment in the sense of exercise or health reasons.

Combined with Dems answer, that should be it covered.

The patent Dates back to 1890 but the term medicine ball comes from the ships medics who stuffed the leather case with rags and bandages. They were then used as an exercise to try and combat sea sickness in new recruits.

So you were almost there but not quite. One of you set the next question.

No war memorials?

Correct.. Or more specifically, none from WW1. There are 34 in England and Wales in total, and a mere handful of 'Doubly Thankful' villages, with no losses from either WW1 or WW2.

There are none in Scotland or Ireland, and just one in France.

Phil's turn....
