Guys,

I'm going to a different LeMans event (booked before I found out about this) and it will be my first. Staying in a campsite (glamping) right next to the track. I'll keep an eye open for any of you guys on the Eurotunnel - lunchtime Thu and Mon - and en-route as it would be good to meet some of you.

I have one question for any of you guys that have experience of such things..................

Knowing how temperamental my 'Italian mistress' is, does the Maserati recovery apply in Europe and, if not, does anyone know what is the best temporary cover available for recovery back to the UK if my pessimism comes true?

You will have to check but I am pretty sure the Maserati Trident warranty does cover you if you break down in Europe. You may have to hang around whilst it is fixed but I am sure they will put you up.

Jon, have a word with your Insurance company. Most do a 'bolt on' recovery package for a few extra quid. Also, make sure you are covered fully comp abroad as some policies revert to '3rd party only' as soon as you 'hit the beaches'.

I tend to pick up cash at ATMs and consequently pay a **** exchange rate and daft fees for my trouble. This year I'll be buying it from Sainsburys or Tescos which seem to offer about the best rates.

Now, how much should we allow for speeding tickets..?

Sainsburys are very good, book and pay online but collect in your local store.

I have 750 Euros ready for a starter.

We are travelling down from Zeebrugge on Thursday and will be hitting the service station at the Somme around 12/12.30 for refuelling (cars and drivers) if anyone else is in the vicinity around then.

I'd also echo what Benny says about insurance and even if you are covered most insurers require that you tell them before you set off.

I can only advise you to be REALLY REALLY careful in the Pas de Calais in particular, enroute to Le Mans.

Les Flics have a special campaign for the cars going to Le Mans, and will be perfectly happy to make hay. It used to be the case that you could simply pay the fine, wince, and carry on your way. Not so easy now, as they can and will take away your licence on the spot. No licence means you won't be driving, as that's an even bigger offence....

The points for speeding are meaningless in reality. The money and the confiscation of the licence are bad news.

I won't be speeding. , I have driven Enough in France to know better , carnt afford the fines on my poor goat herders salary .

Agree entirely. Stick the cruise on and don't be tempted. On the Monday, Les Flics had staked out the run up to the peage before the motorways split to go north to Caen or east to Calais and were just pulling people over there and then when they got to the toll booth. Also watch out for places where the limit is reduced for 'safety reasons' as they nearly always have cameras on them.

Basically, the Loire police don't want to put people off their biggest cash earner for the year and are more tolerant, so basically the run down the blighters will be doing everything they can to get you.

Another useful tip is to use the 'Waze' app on a smartphone - versions on Android and iPhone are available. The French have really taken to the system, as it allows you to report police speed traps which then appear as an icon and a spoken warning to other users. There's a law in France which prevents the use of a device to detect speed cameras, or report their exact locations; this gets around that problem by telling you that you are entering a 'zone' where speed detection is used...

My Garmin does the same thing and calls it 'a safety camera zone'. Not that I will be using it over there of course......

How does the Garmin know where the mobile police are?
