This is only mildly Maserati related...

I'm taking my wife, and my GTS, down to the New Forest for a 3 nights relaxing break, and am wondering if anyone has suggestions for places to go, roads to drive, places to eat, etc...

We will be staying in New Milton.

Thanks for any suggestions...

Try to avoid Lyndhurst on a Saturday/Sunday or approach from the North as the traffic can be horrendous, but it does have Meridien Modena dealership there which has some nice cars in the showroom. Otherwise all of it nice, and picturesque, cruise along at forty when you are in the New Forest itself as Horses, Donkeys and Ponies free roam. The villages are nice such as Beaulieu, Lymington (old Port) and Brockhurst.

If you are feeling fit, get on a train from New Milton, get off at Sway and walk back! It's take around four hours but you'll pass a few pubs...

We don't have that luxury when we go to see the father in law. Thats where he lives.
If you drive around the high street (which is possible) its a nice town.

Thanks everyone - that's helpful.

I've spent way too much time stuck in a traffic jam on the way into Lyndhurst, so now have a well established route that avoids it altogether.

Will look into Buckler's Hard, and may take the suggestion of a walk from Sway and turn it into a decent run... I'm in the final throes of marathon training, so need to do a decent 10+mile run while I'm down there.

Thanks again...

For sustenance, there's the Chewton Glen, Limewood, and the Pig. All are good, depending on how smart (or casual) you want to go. And if you go to Meridien Modena, ask to see inside the private storage barn - packed full of goodies but usually closed to the general public.

Thanks Ewan for the tip - not sure I will persuade my good lady to come take a look round a Maserati dealership so may have to book her a days worth of treatments at the spa (which could end up costing me and arm and a leg!). We are staying at Chewton Glen, and are planning to eat at the Pig for lunch one of the days...

There's a very expensive barbers in Lyndhurst

Good to know! I'm guessing there's a story behind this, but I won't get a haircut while I'm there...

The La Pergola restaurant is a fantastic Italian or there's also a nice little Thai restaurant tucked away on the high street (both in Lyndhurst) - I've been quite a few times and rate them highly.

I have been to Cheeton Glen a couple of times, once to stay, and last time last year for lunch. Very pricey to stay but the lunch last time was good value.
One idea would be to go to Lymington and you can get ferry to Isle of Wight for the day.

Grew up on the edge of it (1973-1990). Agreed with Ewan - for posh in the Forest: the Pig* in Brockenhurst or Limewood or Beaulieu. For walks: Cadnam area. For pubs: Romsey (near Forest) or Fordingbridge. Lymington good for restaurants and coastal walks. Lyndhurst continues to be horrible except for Meridian. Burley nice to stay, good ice cream.

(* the Pig near Bristol is better if you enjoy driving your Maserati)

It’s an Easter thread revival - as we are back off to the New Forest on Tuesday for 3 child-free nights... one night at the Pig, then two nights at CG.

If the weather is as awful as the forecast suggests it may be a few days of just relaxing with a decent book, but I’m hoping there might be a little bit of driving round the Forest as well... May also pay a visit to Beaulieu.

..and ones to avoid which are pubs/eating.
The Fish in Ringwood has gone downhill. Also The Old Beams at Ibsley is just not great.
Aim higher!
