As a fellow resident of the Loire region, I agree Samur is lovely as is Chinon and that has the added bonus of the classic rally every year a week or so after the LM24H. To the south east of Tours is Amboise which is slightly smaller than both and on the river too. Simply stunning.Just got back from Saumur a Beautiful place on the Loire River and we like it there.

I was at Saumur a few weeks ago (in a motorhome!) trying to find the tunnel where the dambusters dropped the Tallboy. Gave up in the end as it was getting late and wanted to get to an aire on the Loire. Absolutely beautiful part of the world. I'm also window shopping for a house around there, looking along Mayenne, Grez Neuville, Saumur route.Just got back from Saumur a Beautiful place on the Loire River and we like it there.
