Thanks for your input, yeah the variators have been quiet since owning the car. It starts and sounds fine for a while then the ‘tick/rattle’ appears after a while.Look, I havent been around these cars for that long but it does seem to be an issue that comes up. I dont think it is that serious from what I can glean from owners...
It could be many things in essence...Injectors, solenoid valve, sticking lifter, cracked manifold ( valve noise )... I supose it might be a variator- how noisy are yours? You say it runs sweet so Im assuming they are quiet and well behaved...!
Several complainants, myself included, have recorded surprising results from an oil change. Too much oil not only covers your MAF in copious amounts of hot, oily vapour ( bad !) but for me, resulted in an hydraulic tick....I changed a failed sender and oil/filter at one time and it read(s) low..I topped up after getting oil lights..The more you put, the harder it is to read a frothing oil tank and dipstick...Paranoia about low pressure lead me up the wrong alley.. After I removed 1.25 L too much oil..all was good!
Try an engine oil flush if corrosion debris is in the oilways/engine.
There is a product ( additive) designed to loosen stubborn valve gear..No experience of it myself...
You might record it, and describe the symptoms with further investigation as to the parameters and so on....
I think you’re on to something with the oil level, it has been quiet as a mouse while it was jacked high at the front, now it’s on the level the noise has appeared, that’s the only thing that’s changed!
