Two weeks ago, I competed in the annual Passion for Speed motor races at Zwartkops in Pretoria in my Red Pig.
This was the first time that I competed in a serious race in this car and it was very surprising. Last year when we tested the car, it was unstable when braking, so we fitted a double anti-roll bar and that has transformed the handling completely. The car brakes in a straight line and handles very well.
In the first heat I started 5th and finished 3rd, but I broke out of the time limit. For the 2nd heat, I was penalised and demoted to 5th again, but ended up 4th. I had had issues at the previous weekend’s practice session with fuel starvation, and found that the 102 octane racing fuel was attacking the seals in the fuel filter, making them soft and allowing them to split. I had the same issue in the 2nd heat and fell back quite far, only just managing to come home 4th by a few millimetres.
It was great being on the track again and the racing was very close. Bear in mind that die Roe Sau weighs 1550kg, and the lighter cars ahead of me, like the Minis, weigh only 650kg. It is a short track of only 2.4km and the straight is not long enough that I can get my car past the Minis.
It was nevertheless great fun.
I think this photo taken by Anton Wannenburg in Friday's practice with the AMG Driving Academy in the background is absolutely brilliant!
Here is a video clip showing how close the racing was, especially the in-car footage:
