When you connect the NIT cable, it connects the two pins together, meaning that you do effectively have the jumper connected. Hence needing to remove the pins so the NIT cable is unable to connect them together
So the issue is that the ribbon on the NIT covers the jumpers. The OEM hard drive is a little unusual:
OEM Drive:
Jumper on = Slave
Jumper off = Master
Most other drives:
Jumper on = Master
Jumper off = Slave
The NIT ribbon cable is acting as a jumper, turning the OEM drive into the slave...
If your linux savvy then dd is probably as good as anything, it just needs to be able to do a bit-by-bit copy so you get the full partition table etc.
I used:
"sudo dd if=/dev/disk4 conv=sync,noerror bs=64K | gzip -c > /path/to/backup.img.gz" - To back up the disk
"gunzip -c...
I have a spare drive sat in my work bag, I keep meaning to get it in the post to you CatmanV2 but I keep forgetting! In the mean time I've uploaded the image here: https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B2X5REhxBhRMSHEteHRFVVBEbWs
It was this one, though it was a bit cheaper than that I think. Any IDE SSD should do the trick, a Compact Flash card with an IDE adapter may be a cheaper option but I've not tried it!
As for the copying, I used a command line tool called dd. Are you a Windows, Mac or Linux user?
Also, if it does work on someone elses unit then we should find someone with the latest software version and maps and get them to take an image. Might as well
I can upload it somewhere next week, the compressed image is 9gb (including the previous owners music!) or I can post it on one of the spare drives I now have, just pm me your address
Anyone feeling brave and want to try the image from my drive or Moz' in their unit? If it works then hopefully we can save other people from an expensive bill in the future if they don't manage to get an image off their drive before it dies
Great work, glad to hear it's worked for you! I've also got a CF card with adapter it seems like a good way to go.
I've stumped up for a replacement cable which should be with me towards the tail end of next week, so I spent some time with the old cable yesterday seeing if I could find the...
You seem to be able to get them for a £2-300 or so, cheaper to get the cable separately, presuming that is my current issue. Could be useful for other spare parts people needed in the future though
I've attached a few more photos, to be honest I'm struggling with the continuity checking...
