4200 Spyder ABS Diagnostics

Asking for a friend: Using a basic OBD2 fault code reader is it possible to tell which wheel has a faulty ABS sensor? Or can this level of diagnostic only be achieved with a Maserati system? A friend of mine has IMHO been ripped off by his local garage who seem to have guessed where the problem is, replaced the wrong sensor and so the fault hasn’t been cleared. I’ve advised him to go to a good independent like Emblem or McGrath, but I’m curious just what level of diagnostics can be done with a standard code reader on the 4200 ABS?

No. Autel AP 200 should be able to do it. If you're anywhere near me, happy to have a crack to save you risking the £70...

So most repair shops ought to have some suitable ABS diagnostics to hand for a 4200?

Well I wouldn't bank on that. Many generic scanners can't read the extra modules. Given the capability of the AP200 though, it feels a bit of a no brainer (yes I know I sound like a stuck record)

If they have something reasonably good, a Texa, Leonardo, Autel, Launch, Snap-on etc will be fine.

Then of course the trick is knowing how to figure out which bearing.
So, those diagnostic testers don’t give a specific code for say n/s front wheel? If not, what do you do? Buy a new one and connect it at each wheel and see where the fault clears?

You can identify which one is reading incorrectly by driving around at low speed reading the wheel speeds. Then disconnect the one that gives the wrong reading and make sure that it is no longer visible on the live data, just to make sure you have the correct orientation.

It is a complete pain to change one out and then find it was the opposite one which was dodgy.

I bought the launch x431 pro, not cheap - £600 ish but does all cars we own. Maserati 4200 + GS, Vw golf, Audi A6. I regret not buying it sooner to be honest.
Anyway for the abs fault, you can just use a multimeter in thee diode setting and see which has the different resistance- so long as only one has failed the different one is obvs faulty.

The Launch X431 is a Great bit of kit.
The only car I couldn't sort was Mercedes Benz with Adblue problems needing Dealer diagnostic gear.

FWIW my X431 Pro Mini told me yesterday that I don’t have an ABS module in my 2002 Spyder. My subscription has expired so maybe I need an upgrade but I was a bit surprised. I agree it’s a good bit of kit otherwise, used it to adjust my PIS and some other stuff.

Funny thing scanners, I bought a autel ap200 for 45 and it diagnosed the front passenger wheel bearing very quickly. Very impressed. I'd bought a thinkdiag for a porsche cayenne and was useless, so didn't but maserati software for it.

I've used the aa few months ago to diagnose which wheel sensor on a range rover had gone ( as it puts a abs light on they come on safety grounds)
