Hi Guys, while trying to find out why my 7 Litres of expensive oil was turning a nice shade of coffee and the water having nasty globules of the same coffee coloured oil floating around the coolant system, I pulled the heads off (not literally I did use allen sockets) to see if we had a blown gasket (which I would of been surprised of as it has only clocked up 37,000 miles,) now after a lot of head scratching and the removal of the water/oil pump (do not let anybody tell you this is an easy job as the exhaust manifolds are in the way and will not come out until you have removed the engine mount and the engine protector) and speaking to specialists and main dealers, none of whom mentioned that it could possibly be the water/oil heat exchanger, but in desperation I removed the exchanger and after cleaning it up I blocked off one of the fittings, filled it with degreaser (I thought it would be better than water in a oil way) and blew down the other fitting and low and behold out came drops off degreaser. Now I am trying to track down someone who can repair it for me, rather than pay HR Owen 1300.00 + vat or Eurospares £993.00 + vat. The upshot of this all is I now need to put the engine back together and I need the torque settings, I have had a look around for manuals on the net, but they only seem to give you a pictorial guide on how to remove the engine. Any guidance would be gratefully received as it has been a long and expensive week. Regards Neil :):)

Usually when you buy the gaskets, the torque settings are stamped on the packaging.

If not, Voicey would be your man.

Here you go, I have the 4200 engine strip down manual if you want to pm me your email address:

Apply a pre-load equal to 60Nm.

Turn a further 90° so as to obtain a torque of 80±10 Nm; if the desired torque is not obtained, the operation must be repeated.

Observe the tightening sequence.

Thanks Conaero for the manual, all I have to do is wait for Eurospares to send me out the gasket set l and I should be in business.

Fair play Neilbow that's a Job and half.
I have done the Oil/Water pump unit insitu on my 04 4200 just under 4 years ago on my back on the driveway.
Keep us updated as how you get on.

I am impressed, that is no easy task, I had enough trouble getting the pump off without the heads on, it is those pesky exhaust manifolds that cause all the problems. I have since learnt that you have to disconnect the engine mounts and raise the engine to allow the manifolds to be released. The annoying thing about all of this is that I was only checking the oil before I put it up for sale, and secondly I could of got the heater exchanger out quite easily without removing the heads, Oh well we live and learn. If it was easy everybody would attempt it.

A lot of the bolts on the 4200 are single use stretch bolts (like the crank bearing caps) just make sure you replace the bolts that are required.

Well done by the way, no easy task.

That is a big job, well done for going for it.

I'd be interested to know how you got on setting the timing.

Hi, to answer your question I found TDC by inserting a long screwdriver into cylinder no 1 and turning by hand until it rocked from going up to going down and then marked the camshafts with a spot of white paint (if you actually look behind the front camshaft bearing you will see there is a notched mark on the camshaft which lines up with a mark on the middle of the bearing cap) and I marked the crankshaft pulley, when I pulled the front pulley off the key-way is at the 11 O'clock position which is unusual as most engine manufactures put this at the 12 O'clock position. I have since found out from the manual Canaero kindly sent to me that they suggest you mark the chain as well, this is a belt and braces way of doing it.
