I've a good idea how these old mechanical hand brake systems work, same as Volvo, Merc and old 70's Alfa ATE stuff

Question.. Do you have to remove the whole wheel hub assembly to gain access as that also means removing the hub retaining nut which is impossible without an air gun and compressor!

As others mention make sure you wind in shoes using ratchet adjuster with screw driver in bottom of drum section of disc. This will hopefully stop drum dragging on shoes particularly if they are starting to de bond. There is danger pins can pull through back plate and new ones are unavailable.

I replaced the back plates and pins and springs last December and had no problems getting parts?

Cheers Steve

Because occasionally my 3200 just stalls if you try to reverse, as if something is jamming the rear wheels!

Going forward is fine

It could be the retaining pin has actually pulled out already. One of my pins was loose in the drum!

Davy, where did you get the pins and springs from?.. I've always bought my stuff from MD's as Eurospares are a rip off!

my car was like that before i replaced the back plate (which was bending pretty badly, its not a strong thing even when new) the little pins and springs. but adjusting the little brass wheels to back it off as far as you can get away with is a good idea, its fiddly but worth the effort.

Hi, i'm replacing my rear discs, pads and shoes but need new back plates as well, and euro spares are charging £153 + VAT each.
Did you manage to source yours any cheaper, and if so from where? The early 4200's are apparently the same as the 3200's.
Thanks in advance if you save me a few quid.

I repaired the back plates as they had rusted through where the pins are held in.
The cross headed pin that locked in place on turning 90degrees now replaced with a brass bolt and washers.

Unfortunately mine are too rusty and have actually bent. It's just annoying that the later back plates are only £32.

Hi I think i got the back plates from Eurospares and yes they were about that sort of money. A bit expensive really but i could not find an alternative so i just got them anyway. I believe the 4200 and 3200 have the same suspension arms and brakes, with different shocks and suspension control.

Ok thanks, I'm resigned to getting screwed yet again then! They are listed in Maseratiparts from the Netherlands for just 19 Euros but of course are not in stock.
PhilW small world. I used to live (virtually) in the Windsor, was well known for leaving my various Jags overnight in the car park! Fun times.

I would give Ross at meridian a ring as sometimes the main dealers are cheaper and Ross will give 10% off for forum members, also email David Askew he may well have a good second hand set..

Thanks Rex B, Ross from Meridian has just informed me he cant get these parts and there are none available from any dealer worldwide. Eurospares have none,
I've tried overseas suppliers to no avail and every scrap yard I've tried has been unsuccessful. I have just fired off an E-mail to David Askew, my last hope now!
