Way too expensive. I know people who buy cars like this for around the £2k mark.

Cut the sale price in half and that is more realistic with 100k miles and rust.

Probably what happened is the idler casting sheared (I have seen them go before just after cam belt change) which released the belt. A new belt won't have snapped but the heads will be toast and maybe be further damage to the pistons and crank if it let go hard.

I am sure the vendor has already had a payout from the garage who fitted it.

Will be cheap if you buy used heads :)

As Matt says is what has most likely happened and you are better of sourcing a used engine in that case!

Owner says it was done by his mate and that it will only need new valves, yeah right. More likely head and crank too.

Ah, DIY belt change, missed that. What else has his mate done (badly) to his car???

I don't see what could he have done wrong in the belt change that caused it to snap after 1000 miles except an excessive tight tensioner.

It's a trial and error job with the shims to get it right. Took me 3 attempts to get the right shim combination on my belt change.

Of course, it could have failed immediately after the belt change....

Tensioner could have failed or water pump could have seized, could have been a few things. I would tend to agree, 2 1/2 to 3 thousand. Even if you had a spare engine sitting, it's still a100,000 mile car. Worth what? 9k maybe? Maths doesn't add up for me.

Mine was £6000 with the snapped cambelt

It cost me about £700 to fix

ok and what did it entail beau? I guess valves and gasket at the very minimum BUT I guess you were lucky? It could have been a much bigger gamble

Replacement valves were expensive, so I just bought a pair of used heads off one of the specialists (can't remember who)

Replaced the belt and head gaskets and literally that was it, lots of care and time taken to clean everything, Pistons were untouched, must be strong old things as it had 30 bent valves
