As per the title, is availability an issue re bearings for the 4200..?
I think I have found some SKF units, for the front at least. Eurospares want fecking silly money ( £360 + vat + p&p.....!)
If anyone has any tips on where to buy, please let me know.
It may not be bearing wear but I’m hearing a revolution/load based metronomic noise from the drivers side front wheel. It’s gettin*worse I think....

Grtzzz....

Tim :)

The bearing has to be changed as an assembly. So far no-one has been able to find an alternative and it is not possible to dismantle the hub to replace the bearing in a way that allows it to be reassembled. Supply has been an issue, I thought it had been resolved. Some people have a spare one on the shelf for rainy days...

Mmmm...parts for these cars is a nightmare...!
The europspares item is more than just the bearing then I take it ?
Gonna have to get a closer look. I fear Im starting to see the limits of inspection reports...!

Yes, it’s a complete hub which is secured to the upright with 4 cap head screws. The abs sensor is also built in.

A preliminary search has turned up this...ABS incl, and looks to be similar..
(without being familiar with the bearing/hub unit myself...this seems to good to be true but nothing ventured, nothing gained..!!)
It lists two versions as fitting the 4200Coupe GT (6649 & 6984 )

Close but no cigar. When the hub is inserted into the bearing the end is formed over so it is mechanically secured in place. There is no way to press the hub out of the bearing and reuse it.

This is one part where we have completely drawn a blank

Also, the actual ABS sensor is built into the bearing, so an Audi part won’t do it because that mounts the sensor seperately on the hub.

I take it the rears dont go together the same way..?
They dont appear to from ES partsfiche but this isnt reliable technically I sure...
Are there ABS sensors on the rear axle ? Looks like there is but cant see if they're in the bearings....!

Grtzz...!

I have to say, if Zep says we've drawn a blank, it's a really big, solid blank, with extra blanks and some more blank bolted on.

Scratch that..I see they use the same in the rear as up front...!

If anyone has a duff wheel bearing they don't need I would be very interested in machining away the pressed over end to split the assembly apart. It might be possible to cut an internal thread in the original and produce a new end piece with an external thread so that the two halves could be re assembled. That would still leave the ABS sensor problem but it would at least be a start.

I have one, but what I have also discovered is that the housing is also the outer race. It’s not a sealed bearing like you get on a VW. I was going to section my bearing to confirm once and for all.

Where are you based?

Not being anymore conversant with engineering theory than the average layman, I wonder at the complexity of the manufacturing process...
Clearly, there must be an underlying principle that steered the designers away from making a more conventional hub/bearing/abs system. (edit- the car is only 12 years old. Manufacturing materials and processes were already quite developed in relative terms, improving on the limitations in this regard) Unsealed would seem to be asking for trouble...!!!
At least they are all four the same..!

I'm near York but that shouldn't be a problem. Someone posted a sectioned picture of the bearing and it shows the out race as being part of the bearing housing. Why they chose to do it that way I'm not sure. Was it because they thought it was a better solution or is it cheaper to make it like that. Anyway we will never know if there's a solution unless one is carefully dismantled. Then it would come down to how much of the parent material was available to work with and some degree of sideways thinking. I feel that some of the problems with these cars are worth looking at, because if for example you replaced all the wishbones, the wheel bearings and the clutch you would be approaching the value of the car.
