An odd one - how much Buildings & Contents insurance do you pay?

Having only owned flats before, this is my first Buildings and Contents insurance.

We've got a few high value items. The house is also in London, and has a partial flat roof.

We've gone for the premium option and that has returned quotes around £1.5k!

Just wondered what others are paying as that seems an awful lot to me.

Thanks

Wow! That's a lot of money Ross, but I suspect it is immensely post-code dependent. In the UK we live in a very rural location, so the insurance is low (£400ish - can't remember the exact amount), despite the cover we have. Sorry, I know that doesn't help, but I think only people in very similar properties could make the comparison for you.

Sounds incredibly expensive. I pay about a third of that for excellent cover in Hertfordshire - unlimited rebuilding cost, itemised contents including certain items of jewellery. I'm with More Than from memory. Plenty of price comparison sites to look at to gauge if costs are in the right ballpark. Like all insurance, do not pay for things you don't need - check level of cover, accidental damage/loss, rebuild cost etc.

I think it is very expensive as well but I've just run another search on Moneysavingexpert - £1650 is the lowest.

I've got £80k contents, £350k rebuild and a decent amount of out of house valuables.

Can't really help; I'm London, but in a flat. The service charge deals with the building insurance and I got £60,000's worth of contents cover for £150 with http://www.insure4retirement.co.uk - I'm old enough to qualify :(

The flat roof (even partial) could be the problem. We have a flat roof too and most wouldn't touch us with a barge-pole. Look at the different sites, I would never suggest you should falsify your proposal form but some simply ask the question "Is your house of normal construction?" - to which one might honestly answer "yes".

Ross,
We are with Aviva, their cover is excellent..!! £350K rebuilding costs does not sound a lot, I am guessing at the size of your house from the pictures you posted and if you had to rebuild totally, I would not think that would be enough..!! Try getting buildings and contents on seperate policies, see what that works out at..!! You will have to identify high value items, so check T&C's to see what max cover per item is..!!
Insurance is always an issue, but I prefer a good company like Aviva if I have to have part of my house rebuilt..!! I have had repairs done from gales, earthquakes and lightening under our policy and repair costs can be horendous, so get the best buildings you can, with Legal Cover just in case..!!
Cheers

Thanks Robert. The house isn't huge under 2000 sq ft, and it's a terrace. So I'm hoping that £350k would cover it.

You might be right to look at getting separate policies though.

We are going with M&S or Hiscox, so both decent companies - I completely agree on that point.

Ross,
Shop around mate, that seems too high..!! We pay a little more than the figure you have been quoted, but the house is a little larger I imagine, which makes your price over and above what it should be..!! Don't be fooled by rebuilding costs, take account of demolishing what's left, clearing site, making your neighbours houses safe, rebuilding yours, rehousing you whilst the rebuild goes on, etc., it can very quickly add up..!!
Cheers

Crikey:eek:

That's some London mark-up - Up north in Cheshire in a Victorian semi I pay £130 to AXA for:

£500k rebuild
£65k contents

didn't bother with accidental cover or the other stuff though
