Are Volvo on drugs!

In this week Autocar online they mention Volvo have started a configure page for there new top of the range car - Polestar 1.
From the pictures it's a good looking coupe version of their S90 executive saloon. With the new up market badge, and with a price around £55-60,000 plus options different engines with hybrid it may make an interesting alternative to say an E class coupe, and be a logical step up for the brand.
But for reasons I can't work out, they chose to use. Carbon Fibre and charge £135,000!!!
Maybe it's just me, but if I was spending that much money on a car, it would be my local Aston Martin or Bentley dealership I would be going to, for a bit more you could get a DB11 or Continental GT, to say nothing of a Maserati GT with change to spare. Not a Volvo dealer. Unless your s Volvo director of course, which is why to see one of these new Polestar's best to look in the executive car park at Volvo HQ.

Halo car. Very different from their usual fare - why else would Alfa build the 8C or Audi the R8. It doesn't fit into their previous model line up but give the marque a sheen not associated with safe estates. It's also a good marketing tool for hybrid technology a bit like the i8.

It’s a fabulous looking, technical tour de force. As mentioned, it’s a halo car that shows off engineering skills and challenges perceptions. I love it. Volvos are great cars, if you can’t see that and still have 30 year old perceptions, what a shame for you. Go try a Volvo next time you buy a daily driver. Every bit as good as the Germans and with much more design flair.

It’s a Vulva in a nice party frock, but it’s still only a Vulva.

Nothing wrong with a halo car, and nothing wrong with a Volvo. But at £135,000 that's just too much of a leap from what they are known for. As I said I can't imagine anyone considering a Volvo instead of Maserati Aston Bentley etc etc.

Is this any different to BMW charging £120k for their M3 GTS when it came out ....That was silly money but they sold everyone before it hit show rooms and the new one they are making now will be probably more money. Not sure as M has more drawn the Volvo.....Is the Volvo a limited edition or normal production model ?

Andy a big Volvo Coupe is hardly an M3 GTS or equivalent Audi / Merc. I understand a Volvo halo model but this is so far from their normal customer base, I can't see them selling more than a handful and therefore unlikely to influence any buyers to their normal range.

Personally wish Maserati had the balls to put boomerang lights across the tail of 4200 and snub the American market...Funny what they'll do for a buck somehow...!!?!

I am sure I read that this car will only be able to be rented off Volvo.
That’s what they are saying, includes insurance and maintenance so a whole new way of ‘owning’ a car as well. It’s not clear what happens to it at the end of the lease.

They are calling it a subscription, and like any subscription I assume it's for a minimum term and then at some point Polestar will replace the car with a fresh one etc etc. Interesting model in which the price becomes kind of irrelevant, which car prices generally are anyway because for the most part they're purchased on some kind of finance arrangement.

The car looks nice, but aesthetically it doesn't excite me much.

PS - I have nothing against Volvos.

Certainly not saying it's an M3 And just that it is possible to sell a limited run of cars to the faithful. Isn't this Polestar suppose to be the performance car flag ship thoug?
