I've just done the opposite , gone back to sky after not having it for 10 years, it's improved a lot, the ability to record multiple programmes , download films on demand, missed some of a film, watch it from the start instantly

Sky Q is way better than the hd box I had previously

Kodi was a pain in the **** in comparison

Sky Q was convinced me to stay, it is pretty good especially with the slave boxes in the kids bedrooms

Any suggestion on which way to go. I need some sort of recorder box PVR and watch mainly BBC and ITV and C4. Like to see the F1 and certain car programmes, Wheeler Dealers/Car SOS/GM Garage.

I don't do Samsung products and Panasonic is my preferred supplier

Any advice appreciated.

I'd recommend a Humax Freesat PVR - you get more HD channels on Freesat, and you just swap out your Sky box. No need to replace or re-align your dish. If you have Freeview in the TV you get the best of both worlds. Take a look at the HDR-1100S: https://www.humaxdirect.co.uk/hdr-1100s-500gb-black-1.html

I don't generally like Samsung or Panasonic user interfaces. Humax UIs aren't too bad.

If you are with BT broadband, BT TV is good with regard to recording stuff, Youview etc, and for a little a month, £5 or £10 can't remember all rolled up in our package, we have discovery, history channel etc for the car stuff.

In defense of Sky,

(1) I never watch any advertisements (nor the flipping 'half-time match analysis'), as I just set it to record anything I am interested in, and then watch later fast-forwarding through the ads.

(2) I really like a lot of the content, particularly on Sky Atlantic and Sky Arts (although presumably some of it can be got elsewhere): Silicon Valley (with Maseratis), Billions (with Maseratis), Game of Thrones (surprisingly few Maseratis), Fargo, Vinyl, The West Wing, This Is Us, Mock The Week, Classic Albums....
