Having owned various Maseratis over the last 25 years I think you need to drive and compare. The QP/GT are light years ahead of a 4200 in most respects. Lots on here will not agree but the cost of clutch replacement will keep pushing 4200 prices down. For value retention net of maintenance you would be better off with an auto GT IMHO.
I can't argue with this, I have a GT and a GS.

However if you have sub £15k then you really can't beat a 4200 for value for money and performance at that price point.

Yes you could get a GT for that, but it would be the worse car or very high miles... and that will cost you to run/fix than budgets may allow.

They are definitely different cars. One a GT and the other a sports car.

Helpful, and realistically what my budget allows. Thanks.

@bigbob in your experience, apart from the jump in engine size from 4.2 to 4.7 (and resultant bhp) , would you say there is much difference in the way the pre and post facelifted QP Vs drive?
I'm thinking mainly in terms of the weight, steering feel and general dynamic ability.

Thanks

Remember that reselling a Maserati is not an easy process especially when you are selling at what you think are mates rates. I've driven lots of 4200s but of the more modern cars I've driven a 4.2 auto QP, 4.2 (auto) GT, a pre-facelift 4.7 auto GT (my car) and a post facelift 4.7 MC Shift GT. Maybe I am getting old but there is little in it to my mind. Compared with many modern faster cars a V8 Maserati is slow whether it is a 4.2 or a 4.7 (available in four power outputs depending on the model or age but the difference is less than a passenger in your car or not and can you tell the difference?). Sure the MC GT is a bit faster with a quicker shift and lower gear ratios but just look for a car that suits your budget, miles, colour scheme etc as the differences are small.
