Daft Question, booting the QP

I'm not much of racer, I like my QP cos of it's presence, comfort and reasonable costs for which is still essentially a super car.

Sometime I boot it for kicks and I'm in wrong gear (sports manual) and not a lot happens - still quick, but not rapid. Sometimes I get something right and I'm wowed with the acceleration and noise, despite it's age and size it's still a 0-60 in 5 secs car...

Of course I can't replicate the right gear, revs, speed cos I'm not looking at the dash when I do it. so can anyone give me a cheat sheet, say, 20 to 60 mph, to best paddle up, best revs etc.

I should know this, but I don't!

Stick it in manual, revs at about 4k nail the loud pedal, glance at the rev counter, pull the up paddle at just over 7k... repeat until you run out of road/balls!!

The rev limit comes fast... and sometimes catches me... at which point change gear as it hits the limit...

You can't really do any harm to it, as long as your not kaning it day in, day out....

Don't think I've ever gone over 4k!!

That would explain the lack of response then. These engines have to be revved to get the best out of them (peak power is at something like 7000rpm), but as Matt says, the limiter comes up very fast!

Even at 4k changes it's nice enough for me, looking for the neck snapping acceleration on occasion that leaves your stomach in the back seat, did it once but I cant remember the revs, gear etc.

I'm just a poor boy, from a poor family that had Austin Maxi's and Princesses - 3k would wreck the engine lol!!

I think I'm guilty of driving my QP like an Austin Maxi, what has happened to me?

You need to stretch her legs once in a while!
If you think she sounds fruity around 4k, wait till you hear the crescendo at the top end of the rev range!! It will make the hairs on the back of your neck stand up!

And if you thought it gathered momentum before it was on cam... Well !!!

You are in for a treat. Stick it in manual, press the sports button and from 1st or 2nd gear stomp on the loud pedal. Don't lift off. I believe yours is the duoselect but since it's not the gts it should change up by itself when you get to 7k (annoyimgly it won't hang on to the gear) but that means you can concentrate on the horizon.
And don't try to stop giggling.

In manual it will sit bouncing off the limiter till you tell it otherwise...

It may just be an idea to leave it in auto, hit sport and floor the accelerator... pin it to the carpet... it will do a good job of scaring you!

Only if it's a ZF, surely?

If it *is* a ZF it's only just coming on song at 3.5-4k.
Cheat sheet:
Assuming you're tootling in auto / non sport. Paddle down two gears then boot.
If you're auto / sport (why?!) you only need to go down one.

No need to look at the dash IME.

Just tried the double paddle-down, manual/sport after over-rev, 5 down to 3, kin ell....

Proper kick in the back that, couldn't do that in my Dad's T-reg Austin Maxi, engine would have blown up. Mainly cos for my late father oil in the engine was a luxury.....

.

Good innit. Good for overtaking. You just need to be aware that it's quite possible to hit the paddles faster than the gearbox will accept input.

I let my son drive my GTS (usually drives a Golf GTI with stage 3 map blah blah).

He said it felt unresponsive, so got him on the bypass at 70mph in 6 - told him to hit the paddle x3 and stick his foot to the floor !!

He struggle for keep with the up shifts (most likely distracted by having to clench his bum cheeks)

He will never describe my car as unresponsive ever again.........

Great stuff, I love the split personality of these cars, but I've suffered from 'dad having **** cars syndrome' - scared to boot it in case I break it.....

For a V8 it does need to be in the right rev range. When you get that..........

How is he doing? :D
