Its when he realises that cleaning dads car achieves brownie points , then discovers the green scourers for those stubborn stains , happened to my brother , Red merc 300 T years ago , poor sam gets the occasional cynical backlash all these years later , moral of the story .....Always put your car away clean

Yesterday morning, over to my detailers for a quick going over of the MC-V and for a booked sales viewing on their scissor lift.

Prospective buyer viewer doesn't show - no call, no email, no text and zero communication since. Fecking time wasters doing my head in. I should be used to it by now selling the odd car but the lack of common courtesy from some people still grates. Same day my partner was giving away some office desks surplus to requirements - two people 'wanted them really badly, please hold them we will be there today' - BOTH failed to show. No good deed goes unpunished as they say. One wants to come on Sunday now (no apology mind for the no show) - feck off!

Just bought this 4200 from a French chap who bought it whilst living in England then couldn't get it registered in France. Still on French temporary plates in the picture. Reverted to the UK original 04 plates now.

I wonder why he especially a French guy couldn't get it registered in France especially as it obviously passed the Contrôle technique ?

He said that he had had the car tested by the French authorities (Controle technique?), who insisted that it had to be shown to be road legal in France (despite it being made in the EU), and that they had charged him E900 to do the testing. He said that they had "made problems" because it was a right hand drive import. He reached a point after 6 months where he decided that he would sell it rather than persevere. He's going to find a LHD Maserati from within the EU. Nice bloke, and I felt sorry for him as he hadn't anticipated the pain of dealing with the French authorities when he bought the car whilst living in England.

I checked the car with the previous English owner before parting with the money. Another very genuine chap who gave me all the details of his ownership. The car has been given a superficial once over by a mechanic friend who has experience of Italian marques, and is going to Specialised Automotive Services on 18th April for their Maserati specialist(s) to have a look. Sticky buttons and a poor handbrake seem to be the only things which need fixing. I'll get a full report after Thursday.

How is the French/European view on driving right hand drive cars in Europe, over here its not a problem if its an occasional car and to boot in UK there is a slight maybe 10-15% drop in asking prices for left hookers .............is it the same over there Phil

Good question Loz.
Certainly not easy since Brexit but people are still doing it and paying the tax and duties.
The authorities don't make it easy anymore as ideally they would prefer LHD.
When I bought the Porsche over in 2019 it was really easy but I wouldn't do it again now.
Values are less but plenty of people will buy a rhd car as lots of Brits here and even French enthusiasts after a bargain.

The handbrake on the 4200 / GS is garbage. Dont use it apart from for MOT puposes. The shoes have a habbit of rusting on to the drums and then shedding the lining. If you buy the oem part they are around £80 plus vat each last time i checked and you need 4. You can get a set of Ferodo shoes that fit the 4200 and GS with the exception of 1 year for £30 to £35 for a set of 4 delivered.

Ferodo part number is FSB667
Also an Apec part fits which is SHU726.

Iirc its just 2003 4200 they wont fit.

If you have either washed your car or driven it in the rain dont put your handbrake on as the pads with bind on as they dry regardless of which shoes are fitted.

My mechanic mate said that the handbrake wouldn't pass an MOT in its current state, but it could probably be setup to produce the required brake force to pass. He also said that trying to get it to work properly permanently was "a fool's errand". :) He's going to see if the adjusters can be ratcheted up, and will replace the shoes if they are shot, so your steer on that is great, thanks.

Because my garage has a slight slope i have plastic 'bumps' I drive over,it stops the car rolling back so I do not have to keep it in gear, or use the the handbrake.
Or just screw a strip of wood acrros the garage (thanks to allan!)

Good idea, but my drive is flat, so the car stays put without any restraint. Problems could happen when doing a hill start with it being automatic, especially when it's cold and revving a bit quickly. Not an issue.... so far!
