Funny Smell......

....Ok so the misses was doing some spirited driving in the 4200 yesterday.....something inherently wrong with her as she seems to be too in-love with the right peddle - real petrol head, anyways i digress......we both noticed a smell in the car rather like an egg. we turned to give each other that look of "did you let one go" but she swore blind that she didn't and I the same....

but even when she slowed down we could still smell this slight eggy smell. It's only been evident the past couple of drives. anyone smelt anything similar before in their 4200? could it be some clogged up filter that may be either dirty/water logged?

Any idea's (sensible mind :)) appreciated

Sounds more catalyst oriented......people used to remark on a sulphurous odour at times. Not clutch by the way?

Ok, here is my take on what smells coming from a car is the result of:

Eggy smell - failed cat
Acrid smell - clutch slipping
Burning Oil smell - engine burning oil from the exhaust
Sweet smell - Antifreeze being burnt, failed head gasket.
Plastic smell - Your on fire.

This is getting like the perfume factory at Grasse.....may I introduce you to Monsieur Le Nez.......his finely tuned nose can detect 2,500 different smells....just 98,500 less than your average dog!!!!

That makes 101,000 smells. That seems a strange number. I would have said 100,000 and left it at that

This is where we'll tend to disagree , or have differing opinions , i'll go with the Cats , if its eggy/sulphurous smell , Cats by there very nature occasionally get a coating/ build up when driven slowly or and on continual short journey's , a severe sustained blast heats them right up and then on overun the nuburnt fuel stinks like bad eggs , i have had this on both cars occasionally both have had recent MOT and no rattling noises on start up ; therefore in my eyes they met the emissions and are doing there job profficiently , what i do advise is get them checked next time your at the garage and i mean a masser dealer or indie not a joe bloggs down the road

Aircon or leaky heater matrix is normally a damp musty smell to me

Aircon is a cross between rotten eggs, and cat pee.
Because of the very low sulphur in petrol, these days, exhausts rarely smell of bad eggs.

Great - CAT or Aircon - sounds like Aircon will be cheaper to fix/sort if indeed it just needs regassing. CATS on these things cost a fortune i hear - but similar to Loz my MOT wasn't that long ago and it passed with ease.

Thanks for replies all.
