future classics?

Had an Audi Quattro 200 turbo once, C100BNF, it was extremely unreliable. PS pump went, brake cylinders, water pump, vacuum leaks everywhere causing it to rev up to 5k and cut the turbo in at will - scared the pants off me. .

Mate of mine used to work for Audi at the time of the 200, he was at a rolling road test with a 200 Turbo when the rolling road tester slammed the throttle to the floor to check the kick down, it kicked down, the turbo kicked in and the car was ripped from its mountings and thrown across the test area. Fortunately no one was injured but car and test equipment was scrap.

It was a street sleeper, looked like a bog standard 100, some obvious differences to the trained eye, remember twirling it round the gravel car park at work, still hard to unstick it....

Must admit I am not an MX5 fan and whilst I understand it is a very good car, is it a future classic, well yes and no.

...yes, due to its open top, RWD with a great chassis....its basically the classic British sports car

...and no, because they made so many of them and thus prices will never surge to a level that they should be due to supply outstripping demand.

Just like most everyday Ford Escort, Capris even Cortinas FFS and they have all become classics but I sort of agree with the sentiment

You could also argue the Beetle case too I suppose. Being a classic is sometimes more than simply the value.

Although, the Beetle is hugely loved where the MX5 is not.

The MX5 needs a couple of decades of culling to reduce the numbers as one can still be found outside most hair dressing salons.

What ever is going to happen to Mclarens, will they ever become collectors cars? Bespoke British super-cars, racing heritage, aerospace engineering and build. Yet all other than the F1 seem to be trickling down in price. Any ideas?

I wish they would trickle down a bit faster as I would have one

Problem with McLaren is the servicing and parts. I am pretty sure they all have to go back to the factory in Woking and this is a pants down excercise. Well, thats what scares me off, maybe its changed.

720S would be most appreciated but still a cool quarter of a million for the privilege :)

The ones I looked at have been serviced at the supplying dealers, but there must be an independent who can change oil and filters for a reasonable cost.

Not the case as they sell them outside the UK too, you know ;)

Thing is, they are starting to look like a bargain (it's all relative, I know). A Fezza 458 or 488 (along with all that guff that seems to come with ownership, at least 'down' here) will cost me a chunk more than an equivalent Maca, a nice 650s with 12K miles is at 110K GBP equivalent, a 488 150k. Of the two, IMHO the Maca is the more capable car, but of course, the Fezza has the emozione.

I wonder what the two will be worth in 10 years - the time I seem to keep cars for ??

Correct. Parts and servicing are astronomical and no, there aren't any indys I know that can work on them - even bodyshops have to buy paint from McLaren and they only supply their own approved repairers. Main dealer network is diffuse and sparse to say the least.

You chaps are quite tough on Mclarens. Maybe rightly so (and maybe explains their price). I must say though that I had another bash in a 650s at the weekend and it is simply amazing. I have also driven the 458 and 488, which a great cars too, but the way the Maca manages to tootle around, and then produce warp speed, is just amazing. It's not the horsepower - the thing has 500lbft of torque....

No likers out there?
