This small detail sorta seals it I suppose.....

Recently, Chrysler reported a 22% rise in third-quarter profits to $464m, with net revenue up 13.5% to $17.6bn.

This from another report will be worrisome for future prospects though of all 3 named makers

Research by the investment bank UBS estimates that in the last five years VW has spent 39bn euros (£33bn; $52bn) on R&D, with Daimler spending about 26bn euros and BMW some 17bn.

Peugeot, Renault and Fiat spent barely 10bn euros each, according to the research.

Consider that BMW cars cost 100%+ more than the same Pug, Citroën or Fiat is their extra 7billion investment really any better...and the French manufacturers are all the same conglomerate

Good old Fiat...we wouldn't have the new Maserati brand without them....and they still haven't given up on Alfa!

Depends what the do with Chrysler. I know they are producing smaller fuel efficient cars but are they of any descent quality.

Platform sharing will of course carry on, the problem is what the association and image of the US brand on Ferrari, Maserati and Alfa to some extent.

Time will tell but it's making good profits so for now I say its a good thing.

Is it a good idea..God knows....So far the platform sharing must help save money but the worse bit so far is the use of the terrible engines from Chrysler in the Alfas......

Surely anything they do with Chrysler is better? if there was ever a company who's cars needed some italian flare it must be Chrysler?

Take note of the footnote to the BBC article as it outlines a truly awful scenario:

"I still think a further tie up and perhaps an equity stake by an outside investor- perhaps with a Chinese auto firm - will be needed to get debt down and to give scale to exploit volume economies across brands. This isn't the end of the story."
