Got my car detailed

So, the story goes, I made a comment on the Le Mans Instagram page early summer (before Le Mans) and someone I went to school with responded to my comment.
Anyway, we connected on Facebook and had a good old chat about the old days and the conversation got round to what we're both doing now.
As we've both had a massive career change since we last saw each other about 15-20 years ago, I was interested to hear that he gave up building roads and carparks, and is now a car detailer.
He said he'd love to have a go at mine especially as I had mentioned that I had a few scratches which needed attention, loads of swirl marks and that 3/4's of the car probably needs a re-spray to get it looking A1.

So I dropped my car off with him Friday afternoon as I was spending the weekend with my parents and picked it up Sunday afternoon.
I was gobsmacked at the results. And the car looks far far better than I could ever imagined. It looks better than when I bought it!

The bits I thought would need a spray, I don't, the scratches are non-existent, the work is top drawer, and he is much cheaper (I think as he has just got started) than anywhere I've come across (by about 70%!!!).

The results are here. And I've not used any fancy instagram filters either.
This is who I used. http://www.hyperglosspvd.co.uk
I would thoroughly recommend Darren. He's based in Wickford, Essex, but does travel and has clients in all over Essex, Kent, Herts and London as well.

Looks great. Mine has a lot of stone chips on the front - not obvious from a distance but annoying to me. Does the paint correction sort that out or does it need respraying?

That'll be one for one of the detailing experts I'm afraid. Some of mine look to have gone, but obviously some are still there.

If you have some touch up paint and patients!!.........
Touch up chip with paint and allow to fully cure
Apply a scratch remover to even/smooth out
Re-do the above approx. 3 times until all is flat and even.
Polish area to remove the dulling from the scratch remover

Takes some time but a good result!!

Not sure I've got the patience for that! I'd finish up doing this on most of the front end.

Do we ask the patients to do the sanding and the polishing for us?

The paint correction will take out minor swirls. It will not correct for stone chips. If you plan on having the car detailed, it is advisable to have the respray to get rid of the stone chips. Allow the lacquer to dry for about 2-4 weeks. Then a full machine polish. And THEN a full detail with top class carnauba wax or ceramic coating applied. A full machine polish, paint correction with GTech ceramic coating serum (usually guaranteed for 7 years) will be around £1500 - £2200. Plus the cost of the front end respray to get rid of the stone chips first before anything else. The cost of the front end respray will vary depending on if its the front bumper only (made of PU? - polyurethane?) or back to metal on bonnet (waste of time filling in stone chips on the metal bonnet) and possibly blend into the front wings and spray the back of the mirrors.

In 2015 I had the full front end of 5 years of stone chips fixed at a Porsche approved bodyshop - front PU. aerokit splitter, back-to-metal respray on bonnet, blend into wings, back of mirrors, followed by full machine polish finished with SwissVax carnauba wax. The result was amazing and still is. Some light swirls have re-appeared despite two-bucket wash method - inevitable in dark colour cars. It was all done at a Porsche-approved bodyshop which means it was not cheap - but results tremendous and water-tight life-long warranty on the job.

Does the ceramic coating prevent future chips? There's a few quite deep ones in the bonnet so I'll probably have to get a back to metal job. The leading edges of the rear wings behind the doors and the rear wheel arches are also suffering so starting to look like an expensive job!

No - a ceramic coating definitely doesn’t prevent future chips.... or at least the one I got didn’t.

I had my car detailed with several panels resprayed, bumper resprayed, full paint correction and a professional Williams F1 ceramic applied, and then got about 6 stone chips on the bumper and bonnet from this year’s trip to LeMans.

Very annoying indeed, as I had intended to get paint protection film applied, but decided to save some money...

No the ceramic coating wont do anything to prevent future chips. The only way to prevent or minimise chips is a clear paint protection film -but even that can fail and water then gets under the film. Film can only be applied to immaculate paintwork. So you have that cost before the PPF. Typical pries for a full front end film and mirror is around £2k.. More if you include other high risk zones as the ones you highlighted. Lot of cowboys doing PPF. Be careful and dont get seduced by low price of any provider. take three quotes and establish the low and the high and find a middle one on price. Lots of guys on the Porsche forum have it done - the car is very prone to chips due to how low it is and the shape.

Sounds like you're into a big expensive respray job. Tatty cars with stone damage nobody wants - even traders will mark it down based on prepping for sale costs. I guess the GT is coming to an age where they are showing stone chip damage and general mechanical wear and tear accumulated over the better part of 8-10 years - so need a shed load of money spending on them. I see it on the Porsche forum a lot - but the Porsche guys offload them onto some unsuspecting tw&t who has no idea he is buying a dog hiding £5k-£10k in bills on his first service.

The chap that did mine will do the stone chips if you give him the paint code. In the end the rate at which mine chips, due to the mileage, I skipped that and will probably just get the front end sprayed after next years road trip. Then re-corrected and ceramic coated.

Edit: Here was a picture I got when it was being detailed:
