The air con refrigerants contain lubrication don’t know if it deteriorates. Car air con compressors are quite interesting as they’re a sliding piston like an engine.
The refrigerant itself doesn’t contain oil. Some of the little home use cans you can buy have oil added, but it is rarely necessary. This is (another) common misconception. Commercial bottles used with the machines contain no oil.
Your right about the compressors, the cam rotor used in some of them is quite an interesting mechanism.
Matt makes a fair point about knowing how much gas is recovered will tell you if leaks, but there is no chemical or mechanical reason to replace refrigerant, you can just put it back in if it hasn’t lost any.
I thought refrigerant contained a polyester lubricant?
