Hopefully Catman is sending a HD with the software loaded to it, to try in our defective unit. With any luck this will work, and faulty units can be repaired for future people!

So I analysed the SSD today whilst I had some time and it appears that the image I put on it had changed, some folders had been deleted. I did some googling and found a post from another forum (peugeot) as many of these NIT's are used by French Cars (Magnetti Marelli part RT3/4)

It talks about replacing the HDD and also SSD as an alternative but then says SSD is not a great replacement.

"Solid State Drives (SSDs)
I tried a PATA SSD drive previously (an SSD with an IDE interface), but this failed miserably. The system got stuck in a loop and would not work at all.

There have been those that have tried an SSD, but many find it works for a while, then the whole system starts to slow down and grind to a halt. Delays in navigation processing, route calculation, system reboots, freezing and other odd behaviour have all been exhibited when using an SSD.

Apart from compatibility, this may also be due to the drive running out of free data blocks to write data to. Without OS level TRIM support, the system slows down as a result of the intense delete/ re-write cycles that occur. As SSDs only work with whole data blocks, in order to write any data, the SSD has to first erase the whole block and any existing data held within it, then re-write the whole block again with the new data. These additional data writes slows down the system, causing delays and extra wear, reducing the life expectancy of the drive. The TRIM function can work with the actual data pages that are contained within the data blocks, so saves unnecessary writes. Additionally, with an OS that supports TRIM, the OS sends a TRIM command to the SSD controller when specific data is redundant or no longer required. TRIM can then erase this data area in advance of the OS needing the space and so speed things up considerably.

So SSDs would be great, except that it seems the TRIM function isn’t supported by the 6.3.0 version of the QNX RTOS used in this system and does need to be supported by the both the OS and the hardware to work. Although most controllers will have some form of internal controller to undertake wear levelling across the drive, it is a much slower system than having native file support."

It states that Compact Flash is the best replacement.

It is, and could explain the temperature sensitivity (mine exhibits rebooting at high temperature ).

Well, that's my over temp theory down the pan. Decent trip up M5/M6, steady 10 degrees C, passing Worcester, and off she goes, recycling endlessly, entering maintenance mode, reboot.

For about half an hour, then past Birmingham, settled down. Same on the return, approaching Birmingham, and off she goes again. Set the air on at lowest, no different, set at 30 degrees, no different, past Birmingham, settled down...

So not temperature related, dry joints, probably head stress, given that the maps came up, in dense areas, probably head failure on map activity. Switched the screen to simple Day-Date display, fine.

Only a drive change will prove anything, or maybe not.......

I'm astonished that something as common on this mark 1 NIT has never been diagnosed.

Making big progress on this and I have a drive winging it's way to you Robin with your image on it. It's a wonderful thing :D

Let me know if it works and you can keep the drive and have it on me as a thank you for helping me with testing etc...

Step by step elimination, Phil.

Still lots to do. Not sure that your image failing to load is:-

a) HW incompatibility. My MK1 NIT HW with your MK 2 SW
b) Vehicle signature check. SW against vehicle Serial number

We should attempt to eliminate one those. Another MK1 image on mine or a MK 2 on yours.

In any event thoroughly interesting exercise. Happy to Continue NIT swapping and disk imaging.

I'll certainly experiment with flash disk.

AND......

more than grateful for a reversion disk if and when mine starts headcrashing.

Also see about upgrading MK1 to MK2 with BT and USB + a SW blow

Great fun

I have not read this very long thread. But you are talking some stuff I know about. I have a company that recovers data from failed drives. I would be happy to clone one disk to another (free) etc. I'll pay return postage too, for 'the cause'.

We can also clone failed or failing drives.

Maybe I should read the thread???

Thanks. We're already cloning madly

Can now offer a solution for this to all 4.2 GT and 4.7GTS/Strad owners by supplying an original Endurastar drive with standard image (different between the two cars) with a 3 month warranty.

I am working on a QP Bose NIT solution right now so watch this space.

Great work by all involved.

The tech talk had me scratching my head most of the time but really please to see forum members spend so much time and effort sorting out a problem and then willing to share.

Well done guys.

I've been contacted by someone with a Bose NIT issue there are 4 head units remaining in the whole World, Maserati want £3k plus VAT for one. I can sort this for way way less than that.
