As asked by Matt, I'll attempt to upload a few pictures of my Khamsin. Time permitting I'll share some of my experiences of her with you.

She's a 1982 Tipo 120 Khamsin, chassis numer 433, so six away from the last allocated RHD number of 445, (Odd numbers used for RHD).
She currently has about 65K and to my shame has had about the same milage for the last few years due to lack of use. The original colour is silver with cream (described as Bianca) leather, grey carpets and dash top. Though the car has been resprayed in a modern Maserati shade of silver. I'm not that taken with the spray job and may consider a change of colour if and when I get round to it.

For those new to the type the spec is 4.9 Litre V8, dry sump with 4 double barrel 42DCNF Webbers. Usual fare of ZF 5 speed gearbox and Salisbury diff. Unusal for Maserati at that stage was the adoption of independant suspension for the GT car as it had been live axles in both the Indy and Ghibli. The front end is straight from a MK1 Jaguar and the rear end is an interpretaion of the Jaguar concept of a subframe with double wishbones encasing the rear axle.

The most radical difference was the use of Citroen hydraulics (and one of the reason some in Maserati circles do not rate the car) for the brakes, steering, clutch, pop up headlights and seat up & down movement. But the adoption of these systems add character to the car, which when you get used to it can be driven on finger tips, and stopped on a sixpence.

I'll do more of a write up some time later but hopefully if I'm successful there will be a few pictures attached.

Also if interested for more info take look at Ferraichat.com, under the Maserati thread for the Khamsin. Some great posts by folk a lot more knowledgable than me.

Thanks Bal, your car looks really, really good. Like Loz says, that interior is something else.

What is exactly wrong with the paint, it looks good in the pics but appreciate that it is very difficult to tell.

No chance of you bringing it to Ace Cafe on the 13 May?....like you say, it needs some miles on it.

Can you advise us on values?

Interior

Hi Guys,

thanks for your kind comments. When I first got her I could not stop myself going to the garage with a glass of wine and just admiring the looks. Sad I know.

The interior still needs some work. I spent a week a couple of years back taking out all of the leather items to clean and re-colour them. The only item done in situ was the dash. I sent a sample to Woolies who mixed up the dye to match. Was labour intesive, but the results were worth it. The flash from the photos shows up too much sheen, it's not like that in the flesh so to speak.

I also hand stitched a repair to the driver's seat piping by finding some extra leather under the seat. The carpets need replacing as leaking LHM fluid caused damage to the driver's footwell piece. As I can't get a match to the grey shade I'm thinking of changing it to black if I can find someone who can make me a set in good quality carpet.

The paint whilst ok, wasn't done with trim items removed, so it was a quick job to sell off by the previous owner. Some bubbles have appeared on two of the wheel arches, and drivers door. The underneath really could do with stripping and painting properly. Also I had a moment by raising the headlamps while the bonnet was up and chipped the paint. My repair is not the best as you cannot blow silver in locally, so you have a patch on the offside front edge of the bonnet.

Matt, I won't be able to make it to Ace as it's booked in for some work on the 8th of May. I've found that the Hydraulic pressure is not being maintained long enough and the steering at parking speeds is not light enough. So I've arranged to have the main regulator, spheres and pump rebuilt followed by a full system bleed. While in at Migliore I hope to have the carbs tuned and a compression test carried out to guage the state of the engine as I get a whiff of burnt oil. May just be hardened valve seals or maybe pisotn rings etc. No doubt caused by the lack of use, but if I can get her ready I'd really like to make it to Stanford Hall this year. With any luck I may be able to meet up with some of you guys at some other meeting. Aim is to make sure she's ok mechanically and then move onto the cosmetics. My own facilities are not good as you will see from the picture of where she lives, making me rely upon the services of others, not good for the wallet.

The rear panel is actually made of perspex, and yes it's a boon when parking. Though it does cause some reflections of the white lines on roads.
Attached below are some pictures of the interior before I worked on it for you to compare against. Also included is one with my coupe.

I'll post some more of my trial and tribulations soon

Cheers

Bal

So Bal, you would agree that the Woolies kit is well worth it, did you do the re colonising yourself?

I see its very tight in your garage, where exactly do you stand with your glass of wine, he he.

Luv the car, I really like all things Maserati and 1970's and your car sums it up in my mind.

Yee Gods Bal, that's a snug fit! I take it you push it it and out? I'm sure it doesn't always feel like it, especially when the bank statements arrive, but I can't imagine a nicer way to wile away your spare time. You have the envious opportunity to restore and care for a beautiful and exotic car. Totally understand the glass of wine. Please do keep us posted? I for one would love to hear how things progress.

Cheers, Emtee.

Yep it's tight.

It's a long garage though with a division in the middle, I used to stand at the back (i.e. facing the nose) while having the wine.

Can't push it as my driver slopes towards the house so you couldn't control the movement when it near 2 tons. I acutally drive her in and out, leaving just 2" either side of the front wings which is the widest point on the car. Then to get out, before I did the up the interior I get out of the rear hatch. Now I have to get out of drivers window, Dukes of Hazzard style, hence the plastic seat covers.

The woolies kit is good. I read the articles in various magazines before trying it. I did do all of the work myself and essentially what you get out is what you put into it. It's all about cleaning, and with light colours you do have to layer on the dye to build up the depth, especially where it had gone down to the natuaral tan leather colour in places. But it did cover well as you can see by the pictures. I took out each panel and seat and did the renovation in the back end of the kitchen (I got that past the Wife !). The piping repair required me to take the skin off and by hand stitch in the repiar using the original holes in the leather.

I've had to do other work like rebuild the front brake caliper in that garage (much fun due to space issues) and various LHM connector blocks or switches. I'll try to explain the process employed in the next post, better do some work before someone says anything....

Only time it's been useful me being 5' 6" and weighing under 10 stone.

Has to be inside as insurance would be null and void if left outside overnight, besides there's 3 other cars on the drive so it's full. This weekend me thinks she will have to come out for a run and a bit of sun so long as I can believe the forecast.

Khamsin Update

Well the lump is out.

Went to visit the car today at Migliore and after a couple of months waiting the engine is out of the car and ready to be dismantled.
At which stage I shall know what to put on my shopping list and start ordering parts.

Let's see where I can get the best prices from. So far from enquiries, MIE seem the best value for money.

Just sad to see her having open heart surgery, just hope Alfieri's reputation for making strong engines applies to my car...

I'll keep the updates coming as the guys make progress.

Bal, may I aplogise profusely.....................

Firstly. I didn't quite realise this was the car you'd talked about at Stanford hall.

2ndly, I hadn't looked at this thread, for some obscure reason.

3rdly, I now realise what I've missed!

What a truly gorgeous car....am flabbergasted........................its gorgeous..................:beauty:.....................:beauty:

Can I wish you all the best in getting your beauty back to full working order and I hope to see it kick up some dirt in the not too distance future! Please keep the pics coming and all the detail you can provide!

All the very best,

P

Hey no worries P, not a car everyone knows about. And thank you for your kind words, I agree it's the ultimate expression of the wedge design. Gandini is a truely blessed artisan when you look at the list of cars he's designed in his career.

The more hardcore Maserati fans don't go out of their way to talk about Khamsin as they view it a mix of technologies that in some folks eyes shouldn't be mixed. Namely the LHM hydraulic systems.
Case of point not a single Khamsin at Stanford Hall, even though the club lists show several owners across the country!

But I suppose the old words ring true, beauty is in the eye of the beholder.....

I'll update as and when the guys make progress.

Totally agree Bal , me im sold on the lower rear screen such a unique point , such a superb example lets hope she's back together soon, and that heart is beating faster than ever, also that the Citroen arterial system plays the game without too many problems best of luck mate , itching to see it in the flesh

PS Can someone explain to me......and then tell me why I shouldn't be irate about why so many continental cars for sale don't include a price???!!!!

Im sure its a selling tactic Frank , the fact that you have shown specific interest might just be enough for you to pay more , rather than choosing initially by price rather than spec

But...all it does is annoy me........................at an Alfa Romeo auction in Italy 2 years ago....................out of 100 plus cars only a few made their estimates.....it seems an odd way to realise the full price....of course as per the continental modus operandi.....they are all 20-30-40% over priced.......???!!

Reluctant to use the word optimistic Loz.......................more like....a mini con, greed.....and a few other less savoury terms.....;)

Really re-snob thing Loz?
