Annual event organised by local Rotary Club for charity, at Cannon Hall Country Park near Barnsley has just been cancelled after 15 years. Reason...Health and Safety.
The local council now want an ambulance, paramedic, (St.Johns not good enough it now seems), traffic management company to direct the cars in the field, wages for council employees to oversee the event etc. The result being that the cost is more that that raised for charity.
It's gone to far now.
Really upset to be honest I've attended from the beginning and it's the best local show in a lovely country park setting, always a superb varied collection of vehicles.

All these claim compensation companies and people looking for a fast buck made for a broken nail will eventually stop us daring to step oitside for fear of a scurrilous claim.

Competing with a council organised event by any chance? (hang on my tin-foil hat has slipped) Gave up getting fed up with H&S being used left right and centre to justify something some muppet somewhere wants to achieve.

I wonder if anyone has asked to see the council's risk assessments................

That's scandalous Mike :(

I suppose they are still happy for the kids to catch diseases and have their fingers bitten at the petting farm behind the house?

It's a wonder that people manage to park in that carpark/field every other busy weekend...

I remember going about 10 years ago - great day out. Shame it's died.

Really annoys me stuff like that! Hopefully be a backlash and council put in its place.

Cannon Hall is actually owned and run by the local council. On previous shows the Town Mayor turns up in the council owned limo (with the number plate THE1) and hands out the awards!

This drives me insane.

You have to challenge it. The block I live in suddenly sprouted emergency exit signage and other "in case of fire do not use lifts" notices all over the place. I challenged our managing agents, they replied it was because their annual risk assessment showed they were needed. I asked for a copy. Then I read through the legislation myself. I insisted their risk assessor met me on site and we walked around the building. Under interrogation from me I got him to confirm none of the signs were needed under the applicable regs. I did however point out a couple of serious emergency exit risks he had completely overlooked.

I know it takes time, it takes energy, but if you don't challenge it this paralysis will take over our lives.

Councils are pathetic and seem to employ legislation rather than sensible people, inneficient and not there to benefit local taxpayers..!!

You are absolutely right, unfortunately I'm not in a position to challenge it, not being the organiser.
The Rotary Club however who do organise the event I hope have challenged it, but it appears to no avail. They have stated that they are after a sponsor for next year...who will pay for all the H&S requirements for the event to continue next year.
