Low Oil

Hi everyone,

I've just had a low oil level warning come up can anyone recommend what oil to use to top up?

Is it 5w-40 I need to use?

The handbook recommends Shell Helix Ultra 5W-40 for petrol engines.

How much would you hazard a guess I will need to add if the light has only just come on? 1L or just go for 5L?

Try 1L. Don't overfill when it comes to oil. The capacity is something like 7L so I'd guess 1-2L would suffice ? 5L would require really significant oil loss.

Although I agree with what the handbook recommends you should not mix oils... so top up if you know what's in there and its correct, or do a full oil change if not.

I've never had to top up the VI, but on routine checks of other cars I normally add half a litre at a time then allow for it to reach the sump before re-checking.

Sportsitalia (remember them) we used to buy 200L drums of HX8 and it went in pretty much everything Fer/Mas without issue.

Have you actually checked the oil level with the dipstick? I ask because - on my 3200 - the low oil level will light up to remind you to check. The way it works is if you’ve opened the fuel filler cap to refill a number of times (I think it’s about 3) without opening the bonnet then the low oil level will come on and go out after you’ve opened the bonnet … This happened to me last summer when I was touring in Europe, doing lots of miles in a few days. Gave me a bit of a scare!

Popped 1ltr in and took a bit of running but the warning has gone out on the dash. Thanks for all the replies.
