I have been monitoring the numbers and models of Masers for sale on AT for the last 4 years, ie since I first searched for one, over the last few weeks the numbers for sale has dropped off dramatically.

Normally the number has been very constant ....around the 220 mark, recently its been 180......with a distinct shortage of 3200 and 4200s in particular......anyone hazard a guess or even an educated guess/reason ( of course I realise with age/accident numbers of older models will go down...but still)?

I find that there are a lot of bad ones being scrapped, trashed nowadays. The good ones tend to be bought and kept longer term by enthusiasts, so not so many on the market at any one time.

I agree, nice 3200's and some early 4200's are getting hard to find nowaday's...David Aswith says early 3200's are being scrapped/written off around one a month...In a couple of years time there won't be many left

Is it also that people don't want themdue to fuel prices etc...so owners are holding on rather than having their trousers pulled down by dealers on PX etc....

That's an interesting point, Andy. I wonder to what extent fuel prices stifle this market. There aren't many cars for which I would tolerate mpg at around 20, but these are so much fun and such a joy to own that it's worth it. Combine it with the fact that I probably do half the miles I would in a boring car and it kind of evens out.

I suspect a lot of 3200/4200 owners are relegating their cars to occassional use. That's not a problem as long as they are maintained sufficiently but we all know that as cars get older, people cut corners on maintenance. Given how low values are now getting it is no surprise that cars are getting scrapped. Let's face it what is the chance that a 3200 will throw a dash light during an MOT.............?

Interesting stats.

IIRC, new registrations have dropped off a bit too, no?

Give it some time, until the Kubang, Ghibli, new QP filter through and numbers will rise again...not that I think thats a good thing!

A mate of mine was looking for a new car recently including a 3200GT.
The main reason he gave for not eventually buying is the justification of spending a couple of grand a year running a car that is currently worth 12k-15k so I'd have to agree that these cars are probably only now being bought by enthusiasts in heart over head purchases. This was definitely how I bought mine, though I'd only class myself as an apprentice enthusiast at the moment.

I've no doubt the threat of ever increasing fuel prices and the current infatuation with mpg plays a small part as comments I get usually go along the lines, 'love your car, but I bet it costs a fortune in petrol'.

Like its been previously said, I'd rather pay a little extra for the pleasure personally.

It's a bit of a pig Frank; finding the 'right' car in terms of condition, history, mileage, and price, is proving challenging. Most of the cars (3200/4200) on offer have been around for a while and there are very few examples which are new to market.

I don't want something for nothing (ok I do but I won't get it) and have a reasonable budget, and I know I'm being picky in my selection, but unless I raise my game to either a GS or a QP, the choice is very limited. I have found just one car that might fit the bill and I've covered a lot of miles in the search.

On the flip side I got oh so lucky on a couple of auction lots yesterday. I left really cheeky commission bids on some very nice motoring literature, left the auction to view a Mas (the one that might fit the bill - still have to get a ppi though), and on return found I'd won the auction lots so maybe 'The Man up there' is smiling on me.

Oh look, the sun's out too!

PH

BTW, the car we discussed last week had been sold.

If you don't cover a large mileage each year, a £12k 3200 makes sense as a purchase, even with annual costs of circa £1.5k. Most newer £12k cars will depreciate at least that per year, while the 3200 won't. Values were static for the last 2 or 3 years, and are now creeping up for the good ones. A good 2001 year 3200 now costs more than a similar milage 2002 4200.

I had two 3200's back in the day and would happily have another now - if I didn't already have too many cars!

I agree 100%. Makes perfect sense when you can dismiss depreciation.

I know which I'd choose, seems a no brainer.

They may not go down further....but any big bills and they will be scrapped or laid up....the cycle of any future classic is no different for a 3200....

If you can get a descent one for £5k I would buy it and store it.

The 3200 is an iconic car and the one that signalled Maserati rebirth. Coupled with the iconic lights and the Ferrari link, one for the future. AC manual will be the pick of the bunch.

Hmmm...are you sure??? They are just a car after all and untill people are prepared to invest serious money on re-builds they will go down and much further than people suggest as the miles go up. Point in question;

ou have a point Pete...Perhaps I should have said good well looked after ones should hold above 10k ...... High miles and dogs will alwas end up getting cheaper......
