Will have a look. Won't the same questions apply?
Go for a Boxster S. Fun to drive and better image than an SLK. Just make sure you get a sticker for the back window that says 'my other car is a maserati GTS' so no-one will question sexuality.

Boxster S is a good call, although personally I prefer the Cayman S. 30mpg on a run should be fine although spirited driving will drop it below that

He won't want to be in a Boxster or Cayman all day every day. The Jag XJ I had was a cracking all round daily. I sold mine for about £15k I think and they will much less now. Nice and quick, comfortable, good fun to drive, don't go wrong much and do plenty of MPG. They are not a BM or Audi! More sensible option that QP. They do plenty of miles and I have seen XJL chauffeur cars at 200/300k miles.

I looked at XJ's before I bought my E Class, but never managed to get one to drive.

The only thing is, I don't really want an old car than i already have (2012).
Perhaps I'll edit my prerequisites.

My pre-requisites are being able to to the following:

1. Fit me in. I'm 6ft 3" and 18 stone (on a good day).
2. Comfortably do 400 miles in a day without the need of a chiropractor afterwards
3. Do at least 30mpg because of the above.
4. Not be a girls car.
5. Not be a hairdressers car.
6. Reliable.
7. Not cost a fortune to fix should something fail.
8. Ideally not an Audi (can't stand them).
9. Ideally not a BMW (see above) although do like the 6 series oddly. Would have to be outstanding for me to consider though.
A jaguar diesel might be worth looking at, if you want a big car then a 3.0 xj might be good, or a XF for a smaller one.
Should also look at a used Tesla model S. More expensive to buy, but now depreciating very slowly after 3 years old and with the mileage you are doing running costs would be £4-5 thousand less per year compared to an ICE.

But make sure you get a late Boxster with the more reliable engine and wont suffer from IMS bearing failure or bore scoring - the latter is a £10k rebuild. The former can be more - depends on how much it crunches the engine.

I had a Jag XF-R Sport Diesel which Jaguar lent me. I nearly gave it back after 100 yards. I thought the handbrake was stuck on. It's so slow up to 70 mph. But after 70 it's like a rocket ship.
Got annihilated by an old Golf GTi at a traffic light Grand Prix so pace below 70mph it was rubbish.
Didn't like the seating position either. Which is a shame as it was lovely looking.

As for Tesla. Don't even go there! It's range wouldn't get me to half my meetings! Let alone back again!
And the bumpers fall off when it rains (apparently).
I'd rather get the bus.

What year would I be looking at?

Consider an S-class like this S350 CDI turbo diesel with 69k miles - barely run-in for a diesel:

https://www.motors.co.uk/car-48458879/?i=3&m=sp

very reliable car. Have it inspected at a Mecedes Benz main dealer or a good independent specialist - but the latter will not be able to interrogate the full service history. A main dealer inspection will bring up the full dealer network service history - at least until the owner(s) took it outside of main dealer network. Absolute bargain price and comfortable car for eating up miles at a very good mpg.

Dont touch a 986 (early boxster) - I wouldn't.
If you want a Boxster go for the 987 Gen 2 with an all-new DFI engine and PDK gearbox (double clutch gearbox). That means you should look at MY2009 onbards - that is cars from 1st August 2008. But be aware that some early MY2009 cars are actually 987 Gen 1 cars registered late.

Here are some pointers and tips - and I stress, an independent inspection is absolutely essential (around £300) with full download of the ECU and borescope if you really want to pout your mind at rest. The 987 gen 2 cars had an all new DFI engine with a much better IMS and RMS seal (though these were fitted in MY2006 onwards).

I think a 2010-2012 Boxster/Boxster S might suit you. Something like this:
https://www.pistonheads.com/classif...-gen-ii-24v-s-pdk----------------2011/8671445
But it lacks the Sport Vhrono pack with the PDK - highly desirable.

Or this with sport chrono:
https://www.pistonheads.com/classif...ts-exhaust-bose-19s-sports-chrono-fsh/8967661

Note: Neither these dealers are recognised Porsche specialists. So an inspection is an absolute must.

Personally, I think you'd prefer the S-Class for soaking up miles in armchair comfort.

Firstly why give a **** what others think? The Boxster is a great handling car as is the SLK especially the AMG variant.

1. Yes you'd even fit in an MX-5 (with the roof down and interior stripped out including seats and carpet.
2. See above, put some memory foam down and sit on that.
3. Yep no probs in an MX5/SLK/Boxster
4. Who cares ?You wear red shoes anyway and like to be called Dorothy at weekends.
5. See 4, it's not like you have anything to prove these days, you've loosened your belt buckle a few notches and have lost all your hair so it's not an issue.
6. Most reliable roadster ever made, 1 million plus people can't be wrong. It even beats the Z3 in power and handling
7. Cheap as chips parts....
8. It's definitely not an Audi, it might share some parts with it, the Blaupunkt radio cassette in my MK2 is shared.
9. It has to be an MX5 then.
10. Yes get the new ND or even the RF. Google the RF it's like an F-type but scaled down and comes in a lovely "Dorothy Red" hue.
12. Well under £20k new, you could get a full manufacturers warranty too and even put some money towards a supercharger kit from BBR.

Because he ain't gonna feel the same after a 400 mile trip in a Boxster as he would in a sumptuous S-class! Here are his top 3 essentials:

Where can you get a 2012 Boxster for £20k. You are definitely out of touch with the Porsche brand. Nobody is an expert on every marque. Please dont try and demonstrate your prowess about Porsche cars from some ownership way back....

An S Class and a Boxster are a very different car. The Thread asks for an SLK!!! Which one is it?

Apart from point 9.. Go and test drive a 640d Grand Coupe. I think it ticks those boxes
