I can't decide on what to replace my E Class work horse with. I don't need 4 seats, but do need something I can comfortably drive from one end other the country to the other and not feel like I need a week in bed to recover.

I've just been looking at Merc SLK's and can't decide whether they are:

A - Hairdressers cars
B - Girls cars

Since they had a facelift, as before they were a definite yes to both.

Thoughts?

SL is a great choice and find myself doing the Autotrader thing all the time.......... Being bigger than the SLK etc it escapes the A) & B) questions but think you have to go the SL500 or ‘63 route.
I reckon the 500 is better looking and a whole lot more affordable to buy & run.

Haha, thought that was coming......... The ‘63 is better still and having had a ‘63 car, I would probably hate myself for going the 500 route!!
Back to Autotrader it is then.

Opps. Typo. Was looking at SLK's for around the 20k mark.

The smaller one as opposed to SL's.

How do I change the thread title to add the K?

2010 low mileage SL500 or similar for a 2005 50/60k SL55 - which they say will appreciate.

R230 SL500's are silly cheap at the moment & cracking cars. Get a naff one mind & you can be reaching for the wallet often. But a sorted one & they are pretty bullet proof.

Early R230 SL500's are same 306bhp M113 lump as in my R129 SL500 as we're carried over. Later 500's were 388bhp newer engine.

You not bothered about running costs?

QP no good? Criminally cheap at mo some of them.

He wants a work horse....which says reliability ...... This is why German is the way to go and not Maserati.

Booster is a great drive Mark. Porsche know how to make an everyday sports car. As long as you go for the mark 3 onwards the two questions don't apply as far as I'm concerned as they got better looking and not so girly. For me if its a good car and I like the way it drives I don't care what people say or think it looks like....I know you said SLK was out because of the two questions but what about an SLK 55 ..... The AMG one is a pretty exciting. Not driven one but been a passenger and I wouldn't give a feck about what others thought as the sound and that engine......the two questions would soon fade away.

Agreed about SLk55 & I think they're great cars but I would find the car & cabin too small as a daily. Not sure Mark is going to shrink so an SL might be a bit more comfy!

Still think a QP must be an option though as the engine & box are pretty bulletproof. I'd have no issue giving a QP that job to do.

That being said the E55K is a cracking car & buy. Mine is a joy to drive over distance & eats miles without battering an eyelid. Both QP & E55K are 10k motors now.

SLK does feel small and not sure it would be great place to spend lots of time.

What about a BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe? You can get 14 or 15 plate sub 30k miles for around £20k

Now you're talking Andy. If I had a bit more money to spend on a daily drive I would have gone for the 640d Gran Coupe. Drive one and it was a very nice place to be.

My pre-requisites are being able to to the following:

1. Fit me in. I'm 6ft 3" and 18 stone (on a good day).
2. Comfortably do 400 miles in a day without the need of a chiropractor afterwards
3. Do at least 30mpg because of the above.
4. Not be a girls car.
5. Not be a hairdressers car.
6. Reliable.
7. Not cost a fortune to fix should something fail.
8. Ideally not an Audi (can't stand them).
9. Ideally not a BMW (see above) although do like the 6 series oddly. Would have to be outstanding for me to consider though.
10. Newer than 2012.
11. Cost circa £20k
