My 'new' Chevette turns 40 next year so won't require tax or MOT. Even if I put it in for a voluntary MOT, it can't fail; all they can do is give me advisories.

Surely that is taking the p155 of the rules. It might be a 59 chassis but the body, bulkhead, dash, engine, suspension are all from a much later vehicle, the vast majority of that vehicle is no where near 40 years old

I know I just find it bizarre, I thought there had to be a proportion of the original vehicle to retain it's details that is certainly true with kit cars.
