Overheating 3200

Appreciate all your comments, some quite severe issues there, hopefully none of them.I will get the thermostat out and give it a check but one from Eurospares is £85 plus vat. It probably hasn't been changed in the life of the car so it will be 15 years old now. Has anyone used this waterless coolant I have seen advertised?.

I hope it works out.

I've looked into the waterless coolant for my car, but there are some pretty significant downsides from my point of view. It's pretty expensive for what it is and if you have a little leak you cannot top up with water, a problem if you are away from home. If you need to change a thermostat (again!) you would need to catch every drop for filtering and reuse.

The specific heat capacity is lower than water (unsurprisingly as only ammonia has a higher SHC and that would be quite unpleasant) so the engine will run a little hotter as the coolant carries heat away more slowly. Plus it is thicker than water / glycol so takes more energy to pump and the parasitic losses in the engine are higher reducing power.

But other than that it's great!

If there's suddenly air in the system and there's no leaks it has to come from some where...Its usually one of the head gaskets leaking combustion gases into the cooling system..

Hope it's your thermostat. I've had a fue head gaskets go in my time and this sounds like the culprit. There is a chemical test you can have done easy way to find out. Good luck hope it's the simple fix.

The fact you say it's ok, once stopping, bleeding and releasing pressure does point to head gasket failure

Can't say I have seen a 3200 thermostat fail in closed position either, only open

So, after much swearing, loss of skin, I fitted the new thermostat, then removed and regitted after a leaking joint was discovered.
Started the car and all seems fine, temperature came up to normal running temp so happy days. However, a ******* awful noise coming from the engine bay, front of the engine, in the middle which I am assuming is the water pump..!!!!
Gutted as that is an expensive job...oh well, had to tr the least expensive option first.
Any one got a spare water pump....lol

If it is a head gasket, would I not see white smoke out the exhausts..????
If it is a head gasket, what sort of financial damage am I looking at??

Sorry to hear of your woes. At least it's a good excuse to now do the cambelts too while you're in there - I hope it's not too bad.

As David Askew said to me when I bought my first Maserati from him (also an AC), you've got to love them!

Calm down Skid...your old AC is getting very collectable and therefore going up in value... lots

I had the head off mine a couple of years ago to fix a bad oil leak,I think it was about £1,200 I'sh at Shiltech

Just get in there and get it fixed!

Of course if the head gasket has actually failed the cylinder head will need machining plus the price of a gasket set..

Note that David Askew can refurbish water pumps these days so that might be an easier route than getting a new one, since i think they are discontinued anyway.

[/ QUOTE]
Thanks if I need pump of watet i'll speak with David Askew

They are getting ridiculously expensive
I paid c£250 a couple of years ago - they are double that now at least
Get a Refurb from David Askew - it’s a timing belt off job so wish I had kept my old pump.
