Problem connecting Android phone to GTS USB

My HTC Android phone needed charging so plugged it into the USB socket.
The car audio/nav screen turned itself off, on, displayed a very faint Maserati logo, displayed only half of a faint Maserati logo, turned off again and repeated the cycle for several times with each stage lasting about a minute.
Eventually it displayed a faint Maserati logo with the message "Insert Update CD". This remained until I unplugged my phone and turned the ignition off. During all of this time I could not use any audio or navigation functions.

I've tried connecting my phone several times and this happens every time.

Also, I noted from the phone battery monitor that it was barely charging the phone while plugged in.

The USB socket works fine if I plug in a USB stick containing MP3 files.
Anyone else experienced this?

Is this because the HTC Android presents (at least) two drives on the USB port, the first one looking like a CD-ROM to the outside world, which the Maser then sees as a potential upgrade disk? You may well be able to disable that on the phone - which HTC is it?

It's an HTC One X+ with Android 4.2.2
Interesting what you say about the two drives. I'll google to see if I can do anything to disable it. Thanks.

I have a HTC & when I plug the usb into the computer you have a screen to say what action to take ie drive sync or charge only. It could be the MAS system is windows based ? & is trying to syn etc if you can try charge only.

Or it's drawing too much current. I *thought* I'd heard that the USB sockets were for sticks only and couldn't charge devices

The manual states "allows you to exchange data and power the connected source"
I suppose barely charging means that it is "powering" it so you could be correct.

I'll go back to plugging in a USB adaptor into the cigarette lighter socket to charge the phone.

Thanks, that's very interesting but for a different reason. I sometimes use the phone as a Satnav in the Caterham with screen on maximum brightness. When plugged in to a 2A USB adaptor it still slowly loses charge. I assumed it was down to a cheap adaptor that wasn't really pumping out 2A. I guess it's actually the phone draining faster than it can take charge.

As for the Maserati, the phone was in the glove box, screen off, doing very little so I guess that's down to the low current in the USB port of the GTS.

...hmmm

I'd not be surprised if they Mas USB wasn't able to deliver enough current and behaved oddly when asked to. I'd be a tad more surprised (but only a tad mind) if HTC had designed a phone that is capable of drawing more than it's max charge current.

Unless it's broken.
