Red arrows?

That will do, those squadrons were all past home of RAF Display teams

1925 Squadron 32 used Sopworth Snipes in Red
1947 Squadron 72 used 7 Vampires
1950 Squadron 54 used Hunters and were the first to have smoke trails
1956 Squadron 111 were the first official team, 5 Hunters in black and were called the Black Arrows - They also hold the record for a loop and barrel roll with 22 Hunters
1960 Squadron 74 The Tigers used Lightening
1961 Squadron 92 the Blue Diamonds once again with Hunters

1964 all previous teams were amalgamated into the Red Arrows, with as today pilots been drawn form existing squadrons.

So over to Wanderer for the next challenge

Right, bit of an odd one, 7 questions, and an 8th for what links them all....

1. Brothers who lead the invasion of Britain on the 5th century.
2. Famous for his twelve labours.
3. The face that launched a thousand ships
4. Famously crossed the Alps by elephant
5. Built a wall but not in China
6. Carthaginian explorer of West Africa
7. Stood against the Spartans at Thermopylae

8. What links the above answers, clue - more contemporarily.

H is a clue to the answer in question 8, but it’s no the asnswer itself, but yes, 1-7 all start with H. And whilst it’s nice to identify 1-7 you don’t need them all for 8.

And, some of the answers for 8 have more Classical Greek versions of their names rather than the Roman ones in the mainstream but shouldn’t throw anyone off.

Clue time.

The subject of question 8 is a civil aircraft, with a unique record, no crashes or passenger losses in service yet all of them were lost in accidents.

Ok this has stagnated a bit, forget 1-7, re 8, i’ll just make 8 the question, though 1-7 will help...

It’s a British pre-war airliner, eight made in two variants, one Europe, one Asia/Africa, and suffered no accidents or passenger losses. However later all were wrecked or lost on war duty.

Only prewar British airliner starting with a H that I can think of is Handley Page

Sort of correct, but the H connects all eight of the aircraft, they were all named after the answers to questions 1-7. Need the specific aircraft, it’s from the 30’s...

Right, the answers..

1. Horsa and Hegist
2. Heracles
3. Helena
4. Hannibal
5. Hadrian
6. Hanno
7. Horatius

Those 8 were all names give to the Handley-Page H.P.42 biplane four engined airliner that server Europe and Asia by Imperial Airways.

All (bar one, destroyed in a hanger fire) entered war service with no crashes are fatalities, a record thought to be fairly unique. During the war as transports all were lost, mostly on the ground do to wind, these planes being built for short unpaved runways had huge wing area (more than a 767 ten times larger) hence a bit of wind and it tries to take off.....

I hankered after the Airfix kit of this plane, never found it in the shops at the time.....

Looked this up after the clue pointing to Handley Page, weren't Hercules, Horatius, Hengist & Helena H.P.45s? Modified H.P.24 more passengers less bags an early version of Ryanair?

This is true, and some were converted one to t'other but basically same plane. Either way Zagster you have the baton.....

TBH I agree, and if was possible something not google-able, but that's not easy in this day and age...
