Several causes, it could well be nothing and just a glitch. It could be the brake switch not fully working or something clogging the reverse lever or at the very worst collapsing clutch springs.
I seriously wouldn't worry about it unless I chappens again or many times.

This has happened to me a couple of times. Usually sorted by switch off and on again. Last time though I was 'showing' car to colleagues and couldn't reverse out of parking space despite numerous restarts etc. Had to get some help to push car out with engine running....v embarrassing.
Have been led to believe it is related to lack of juice in the battery. Have to say each time has been when i have not had trickle charger on for a few days......

The only time I've not been able to get reverse on mine was when I discovered the spring on the reverse lever is 'weak' and the lever does not return itself properly, hence my comment about something clogging the reverse lever above. I suspect mine has some debris in it which is affecting the springs ability to return the lever. This could be a previous owner spilling a fizzy drink or something...

I 'work around' this by being very positive in returning the lever manually whenever I select reverse = simples.

There is a 'fix' thread on here for the reverse lever if the spring has actually dropped off which is not unknown.

Yup, for me it was a gummed up switch that was removed & cleaned by Autoshield. Worked perfectly every time after that.

Removal and cleaning is fairly simple (the unit pops out and a few screws later you are at the mechanism), just time consuming.

I have come across switch variants, some you simply pull back, others you have to lift slightly, then pull back, have you tried this just in case..??

Mine is a lift and pull maybe needs cleaning as feels solid. Where abouts is the switch that's activated by the break peddle.

Underneath the brake pedal, oddly :)
If it's going into first OK, then I suspect it's not likely to be the brake pedal. Worth double checking though.

Can't think of any reason why it should go into first when trying to select reverse :(
