Might be ok P,
but isn't there something about disk and pad wear that makes this a little tricky...
I know you should have new pads on new disks,
and obviously new pads on worn disks is ok,
but not sure about used pads on (different) used disks...
anybody know for sure?

Enzo.

Good morning..... Once new pads have been fitted it takes a few miles for them to 'bed in'. Effectively this means that after a very short period of time the surface of the pads will form a mechanical fit to the disc, rather like pieces of a jig-saw. Once this has been achieved the full surface area of the pads will offer maximum retarding effect. It follows that the developing shape or pattern of both the pads and the disc will be unique. Suppose that these pads have plenty of friction lining remaining but they have had a hard life and you remove them and then fit them to the caliper of another car. The mating surfaces of pads and disc will not align perfectly with 'peaks and troughs'. The brake will not therefore necessarily operate at best efficiency. Furthermore the braking effect may not be even and result in pulling to one side, especially under load. There could also be squealing. As one would expect these symptoms will not occur in every case but it is nonetheless worthy of consideration.

Paul

I think what Paul is trying to say, is that if you use brake pads from another car, they will transfer the disc surface to your discs.

When it comes to brakes, its just not worth the risk!

Think if you can afford the 50k for a GT [Min] you should be able to afford new pads when it comes to fitting time...would you buy a car at that price with a history of second hand parts?...what else has been scrimmped on?

I have to agree. With something like a headlight or a rear view mirror, then second hand is fine. If you're putting on second hand disks, I can understand....but second hand pads, I think that would make me wonder what else has been skrimped on.

would not use 2nd hand pads........
Unless they were "special" used, say for track days. In that case I would file flat the working surfaces for two reasons
makes them "like new" so should bed in better on my "worn" disks
removes build up of material form donor car. Braking is a two way particle exchange, so best avoid contamination on my (£££) disks.
