Improved oils could be a contributory factor, but I'm still not keen on leaving oil in a standing car for too long..!!

Yep, although the "change" hasn't happened over the last two years, more like 15. They didn't want to slacken off the service intervals until the last 5 years due to a) lack of empirical knowledge of what the improvements actually meant and most importantly b) dealers not wanting to loose half of a revenue stream. Only when some manufacturers broke ranks did the rest get forced to over-ride the dealers.

You should also check other non service items, like the suspension, clutch, accident repairs. What's covered by the PPI? Some are just mots...
