Starter motor

Took the 3200 to my workshop today to replace rear disc's and pads, remove centre x pipe on the exhaust, full service and a good looking over. On the way I called into the motor factor to pick some bits up for another job and the car would not start!! When I first left home I noticed it was very slow to turn over but just thought the battery was a bit down. At the factors I put a jump pack on and it "just" started. Arrived at workshop switched it off and tried again but same problem but this time no luck with jump pack. I spent a while checking earth's and battery and they are all spot on so I suspect it is the Starter Motor. Any member changed a one and if so any advise?? Looking at it I would say the inlet has to come off so do I need to order any gaskets/hoses/clips or any other items so I can hopefully have it back working by Thursday as i'm off to Silverstone for the weekend, well hopefully. Any advise would be great. Edd.:omg:

Thanks, that is a fantastic thread, I'm not as worried as I was before I read it. I will also ring Andrew Page with the part numbers as when I spoke to them earlier they said "no chance". Things like make this Forum a fantastic aid to us Maserati Owners. Edd

I replaced my starter with the Bosch unit and the engine starts much better now. It might have been the braided ground strap getting better contact too, but the Bosch unit seemed much better than the Valeo. Check other threads for other jobs to consider while you are in there!

Started today with the post from Parisien loaded on to the lap top for reference. To be honest it was not as bad as I thought it was going to be. The only slight problem I had was a couple of the inlet hex bolts were quite rusted and very tight and I thought I was going to strip a few, but they all came off with plenty of WD40 and a gentle tap with the hammer. The old starter had been changed before as there was no washers on the inlet bolts and when I finally removed the starter it was a Valeo unit. (with the same numbers on the thread) I ordered a Bosh unit from Andrew Page at £54 plus V.A.T. and will have it by Tuesday morning so hopefully have it built back up for Silverstone on Friday. I have also replaced the 4 water hoses under the inlet just in case and will try and buy some stainless steel inlet hex bolts and washers for the re-build. The centre of the engine is full of grime so I will use a old hoover to remove it before the re-build.

A few photos of the engine bay after removal of starter, and "old starter" a valeo that had been replaced before. Looking thru the history the only time it was replaced was a JCT Leeds unless someone changed it and the last owner did not a receipt!! I also removed the X exhaust box and could not believe what was inside. That must restrict the exhaust flow. I opened the box removed all of the internals, welded two straight pipes into the box and then welded the box back up and then put the cover back on. All welding was to the top of the box so looking from under the car it all looks standard. Lets hope the starter arrives tomorrow as promised, re-buid the inlet (I managed to get new Alan bolts & washers) re-fit exhaust and then see how it sounds.done exhaust.jpgexhaust.jpgmaz engine.jpgold starter.jpgstarter.jpg

Edd, you know that centre box you call an Xbox, is actually the exhaust systems secondary cat...It won't work to well without that as the emissions will be through the roof!

Hi I don't think it will affect the emissions as it is post Lambda sensor's and the only material in it is metal foil sheets. Lots of other members have done the same mod and they all seem quite happy.

The starter motor arrived today from Andrew Page as promised, but when I opened the box it was the wrong starter!!!!! The number on the box was correct but someone in Bosh depot had put the wrong starter in it. The starter they sent in the box was off a Transit. They ordered another so hopefully Wednesday will be a better day.

That's a pain when that happens Ed.

Oh well, you should have it sorted soon, good luck.

I *think* you'll find those sheets are actually coated in catalyst, but I could well be wrong.
I was also under the impression that many had done the same thing, so...
Be interested to see what the emissions are in any event.

Quick up-date, Bosh starter arrived today and as the Forum Link said it was a simple task to change the top of the new starter with my old one. Re-fit the starter and all injection system/pipes and so on. Fingers crossed re-connect the battery and start it up. The car started after a few turns and ran fine. I let it get up to temp and then switched if off and checked for any problems. All was fine, starter turns the car over a little quicker I think and the exhaust sounded great. Just as a matter of interest I did a quick emission test and both sides passed with flying colours. I have a few pics of the new starter and emission reading and I will post them as soon as I get time, probably Thursday evening. Thanks for all the help to everyone on the Forum. Edd

Just looking into the starter motor replacement and the main dealer parts prices are

Starter motor at £326.48+vat,
Inlet O rings are £3.33 each +vat
Water manifold O rings are £0.09 each +vat

Looks like the Bosch/Valeo route is the way to go !!!

That really is great info about the starter motor .

Been running with Zorst like this for a couple of years now with no ill effects , just a slightly improved note :alan4:
