Variators, solenoids and accumulators

Hi everyone,

So I do not want to jinx it and I know this is contentious, but my accumulator install seems to have ‘cured’ or at least treated my variator noise. so far 5 cold starts and a couple of warm ones with no noise and very smooth starts. Over the next few days I will get more substantial evidence, but so far so good.

However I will still do the variators in time, but the accumulator is probably good for engine life and my type of usage anyway (every few days or every 2-3 weeks).

So this got me wondering and I thought I would pose a question about solenoids, oil pressure and why the accumulator works well To people who may know better. In my meagre brain, I wonder if having positive oil pressure helps set the variators to base position or at least steadies them so that they are around base position and not trying to lock in place, hence no noise is made? I also wonder what are the symptoms of failed or less than optimum solenoids are. I remember someone saying they disconnected their solenoids and then had no noise, presumably with no oil pressure, the solenoids had a chance to lock and stay locked in base position?

Anyway, this is my install - I did stick it in my other post, but should future people be curious, I will link here so that they do not need to search (I know how difficult it can get). Since the video, I have wired the solenoid for the accumulator to a switch running off the cigarette lighter supply wire. I have also realised that the solenoid I have used is really like a one way valve that can be turned into an open valve. This is great as the switch opens the solenoid and dumps the oil just before engine start, then the solenoid in off position must be spring loaded and allows the accumulator to fill back up on its own ready for the next time. So you only have to remember to press the switch to oil the engine before start and that is it. If anyone else is thinking of this, I will report back in a few days to update how well it is working.

Just an update, many many more cold starts and not one peep from variators in all this time. I do keep upsetting the oil light which logs oil pressure then no oil pressure just before engine start. Sometimes it flashes (depicting sensor issue) but then it clears itself the next time. (Flashing oil sensor light means issue with sensor, oil light permanently on means no oil pressure).

it is really nice knowing that even after two weeks sat doing nothing, I can press a button and pre oil the engine before I start it.

It's a help for sure but having done the job a few times the wear will be in the variators.
This pre lube would stop them ever wearing out.
