Whirring Noise??

This may sound vague and I am afraid it is - for the last couple of times I've fired up the engine I have noticed a fan like whirring noise coming from somewhere underneath the bonnet near the windscreen on the nearside. Its from somewhere around the aluminium block that distributes the brake fluid - but very hard to pin point exactly.
I am a bit baffled as after a minute or so it stops - at first i thought it was the cooling fans running - but its not. It does it mainly from a cold start - not noticed it from hot, no warning lights (good) no other apparent faults (better)
Any ideas as to what it might be?

The engine thermostat is not the most reliable of sensors, so if this is faulty then it could be the cooling fans. I'm only suggesting this as you said you are not entirely sure of the location of the noise.

It's an inexpensive fix if so.

Definately not the cooling fans - thermostat replaced a few months back as it was stuck open, the noise definately coming from under the bonnet, near the windscreen on the nearside

I take it that the aircon is set in the off position, that means the light is on , remember its the opposite way round( econ button on and light showing means aircon is off) econ light off and fans switch not on zero means the aircon is on

Is it a 3200? if so then I have had a similar noise from the Cat preheaters.... although I seem to remember that came from under the offside front wing could be wrong though.

You might have some leaf debris in your cooling fan. It's under the scuttle panel and is protected by a mesh. Not uncommon for it to draw in crud.
