Worth a bid ?

I have been to a couple of the auctions there.
If anything is half decent it goes way over estimate and if it doesn't it is because it is a pile of poo. (and there are a few steaming heaps in their auction)
Some of the photographs flatter to deceive.
It is not the place to get a bargain.

Maybe it's just me, or maybe it's because I remember when you couldn't give a 3500 away. I don't see why they are so special, apart from the badge, and a V8. Period Lancias etc. imho had better looks. The models after this were so much prettier.

I don't understand any of these prices at all. Still the bubble stops me buying so no bad thing!

Wow, Hilts was right, discussed it with him this morning and we both thought £100k+, that's a lot for a car that needs another £100k+ spending on it!

That really is quite a price - someone clearly thinks they're going to rise in value or they just love this model - good luck to them

People are falling for the romance of restoration and underpricing the cost and time involved. Same for houses around London, people overpay for wrecks and realise when they are halfway what they have taken on.

Why do you say 100 to restore it?
I know the pictures can be deceiving but there doesn't seem to be much rust and the interiors look better than some more recent cars I have seen.

All the engine bits seem to be there as well.
I'm genuinely curious as I would like to take on a restoration project at some point in my life.

If you can do the work yourself, then possibly viable. If paying to have it done it takes 1000s of hours.

I don't disagree but the costs these "companies / experts" charge are horrendous, I don't resent people for working hard and making a good living, but I do object to being abused.

I was quoted 40 hours work to remove and refit the gearbox on the Guara. You remove the exhaust back box and rear bumper and it is there infront of you, you would be looking at £4000 plus vat to remove and replace a gearbox. ! I was quoted £2,000 to fit a gearbox into a 550 I borrowed a transmission jack and a couple of nights work in the garage. Yes they have overheads and have invested considerable amounts of money in tools etc but they don't need to claw that money back on every job they do.

There is an article in the months Classic Car on Porsche 356's, with an expert stating a full bare metal respray starts at £30,000 upto £100,000 for a full body restoration - it is a small car no way can it cost that much. or do they just charge a percentage of the final value of the car ?

Look at what people have been charged to change starter motors, I can have mine out of the Ghibli and on the bench in 45 mins, and I have only done it twice, and with Halfords quality tools.

Clearly this car will take a lot to get it up to A1 condition, the Dog of an SL I bought there will cost me £3,000 to have looking nice and that will be 50% of it s final value - hopefully..... The roof now works at last......

I will now go and sit in a dark room and calm down..

The problem is that you cannot just do half a job on these cars they need a full ground up, nuts and bolts resto and once all the paintwork is shot blasted who knows how much structural work it will need? Yes great if you can do it all yourself but there are not many who can.

Good luck to your mate Evo that is one bloody fine car he has there and hopefully one day you and him can come to the Ace or other event and show it off to us all!
