I can assure you HID lamps that have not washers + levellers and without the right marks are a sure MOT failure.
You might fit them and go through the MOT 10 times with no problems but if they spot them they will fail your car.
Also HID bulbs might be a problem for incoming traffic

For these reason I have not fitted them on my car. You have some options:
1) fit the Maserati original lamps....very expensive, may be you could get a decent deal from a salvage car
2) swap for the original bulbs when you go for the MOT
3) a compromise is to get approved halogen bulbs. They really make a difference for £20 and your car is street legal

I have fitted Osram plus 110% upgraded halogen lamps and they are a great improvement over the standard lamps. Eurocarparts always have a selection on sale for around £20 for a set of 2 and delivery is free, Legal and an easy fit

Bulb tech has moved on so much, any of the newer type bulbs will be a huge improvement on what was fitted at the factory plus of course they dim with age

My car has xenon lights I was told factory fitted extra along with carbon door seals and carbon door trims and cruse control.
But no light washers installed. the little cap is there where they should be fitted unless they there but I've not noticed

Hi Fran ,

You raise some valid issues ,

But , before fitting mine I read info from the tester's manual , the latest section 1.7 is as follows :

"Vehicles equipped with High Intensity Discharge (HID) or LED dipped beam headlamps may be fitted with headlamp washers and a suspension or headlamp self levelling system. Where such systems are fitted, they must work; however, it is accepted that it may not be possible to readily determine the functioning of self levelling systems. In such cases, the benefit of the doubt must be given. Headlamp washers may work in conjunction with the windscreen washers (when the dipped beam headlamps are switched on) or by a separate switch"

I took it to mean that some hids (meaning factory) will have auto adjust and cleaning , whilst this isn't mandatory if they are fitted they must work . This coupled with the fact that my car has continually passed it's mot indicates to me that my lights are correctly fitted and aligned and legal . Indeed I have been often dazzled by cars with conventional bulbs because they are poorly aligned or a bulb maybe incorrectly fitted . I don't believe that the lamps themselves are always responsible for issues I think incorrect fitment (or fitting unsuitable items) and poor care with alignment is responsible for most of the issues people see , but as with anything everyone is entitled to their own opinion ;)

With the above text you should be able to win any discussion but I prefer not to take the risk. The majority of (honest) seller of HID kits will tell you that are not street legal and you can fail an MOT. I believe that since the 4200 has projector light this will hide the bulb and if aligned correctly a large number of MOT tester will not even notice them. But if they do you have to refit the original to pass an MOT and for me is too much pain.

In London you can see many cars with after market lights that can make you blind even from far away. Not sure if they get stopped by the police.

I still have 100w H1 bulbs fitted to the Stag, since 1986.
HID kits are the new 100w Halogens! (or 130W if you dare)

Fran ,

I am not trying to win any discussion at all - I am simply putting across my own opinion and situation with the facts and experience that I have available to me .
If , after years of having them fitted I had had loads of aggro with mot tests and other road users flashing me and abusing me I would have taken them out and not bothered but I haven't and the difference in visibility is great and they look like the were standard on the car , so if this helps another owner make an informed decision then that is good ,

That's all

If you get Aggro at MOT test time you need to find a new friendlier MOT station it really is that simple :)
