Phil we use http://www.automobileinspections.com/ and they are pretty good and charge for classic cars $350, you can specify any specific areas that you have concerns with.

Remember that if you do find a car at more than 30 years old, then the duty is 0% and the VAT is only 5%, as long as we make a BTI application, this is where staying in the EU works to our advantage :)

I wonder why the government haven't used that in their tactics, they've tried everything else to scare us

John,
Now that IS interesting as you previously wrote.........

Assuming a Purchase price of $30K
Then the likely costs excluding collection will be around the following: -
Vehicle Purchase £21250
Duty @ 10% £2325
VAT @ 20% £5110
Shipping £1100
Doc Fees £25
Marine Insurance £450
UK THC etc. £370
Registration £55

It IS over 30 years old so with no duty and only 5% VAT that takes my costs down by just over £6000 or put another way $9000 more to use in buying the car or fixing it when it all goes wrong!
I have reached out to some Southern California Ferrari owners to see if I can get a local person to go look at it. If not I will contact the company you recommend. I had reached out to them before I read your recommendation.
