P2187 Error Code

Finally got an ODB Reader which is wi-fi and iPhone compatible. Had an engine warning light and this code P2187 "System Too Lean at Idle (Bank 1)" came up. This started on the same day as I treated the Maser to a tank on 98 octane instead of the usual 95. I will reset the code but wondered if anyone had any advice?

I used one of these Bluetooth OBD2 ELM 327 ELM327 (https://cdon.se/accessoarer/elm327-wifi-elm-327-bildiagnostik-felkodlasare-tuning-p36880408) this is a Swedish website but I have seen them in the UK. Just plugged it in, turned on the engine, connected to the device's wi-fi and downloaded an app from the AppStore. Connected and away you go.

Going to reset the error code in the morning. The only downside is I had to buy the premium edition from the AppStore for 15gbp ish.

You probably have an unmetered air leak. What are the fuel trims on both banks? I wouldn't leave it - if it gets worse then the motronic will eventually hit the limit of how much additional fuel it can add and then you will be running lean...

I've had this before on a GranSport (or two). I would clear it and only do something about it if it appears again.

Thanks Paul and thanks W1ld1 I live in down under Australia, probably less hassle to get one locally - appreciate the offer.

Just checked the values at idle when warm, extreme values I noticed

Short Term Fuel % Trim B1 0 +/- 4%
Short Term Fuel % Trim B2 0 +/- 3%

Long Term B1 -21%
Long Term B2 -18%

When I cleared the error code, the Engine instantly became smoother running. Don't know what this means.

Your LTFT indicate there is a problem. I would want to check them with an SD3 as the negative value doesn't correlate with the "System too lean" error.

However assuming the -20% trim is correct, the ECU is shortening the fuel injected to maintain the correct AFR. For a correctly working engine, LTFT should be below 5% and ideally less than 2%.

The car is in for winter storage now (soon be snowing here), so I will be going in and warming her up once a month. I presume this along with a 500km drive to get her serviced next year isn't an issue. Or?

You should be fine to wait until the winter is over.

Thanks voicey.

Hopefully if won't snow yet. The coldest summer temp recorded here was -5c in August. Historically, the first snow can fall at the start of October, but with the global warming stuff, we have had virtually no snow at Christmas the last couple of years. But temps can regularly plunge below zero. Not great driving conditions with summer tires. Oh and 400hp.

Hello Tridente experts,I read your thread and just wanted to give a quick feedback to the error code p2187.reading this code with a Maserati SD3 :Long term fuel trim additive air ( bank 1) system to rich.this means system is too rich at idle.I had the error code P2189 system to rich at idle bank 2.The Maserati dealer changed the water temperature sensor and it was fine.I think there are different interpretations reading this error code with an Elm327 and a ObdII app or with a Maserati SD3 tester.I trust more the Maserati tester

I was going to advise some caution as to the meaning of P2187 as this is a specialised ?Maserati only code and like Poloplayer I would only trust the actual Maserati reader for this one.

Hmmm. I don't get the error code any more after changing a spark plug. But the ODB reader still reckons it's too rich, but not enough to trigger the errors. I will have the water temp sensor changed at the next service and see if it improves.

What about your Long term fuel trims?Did they improve after changing a spark plug? Are they still in the negative double digits or now single digit? What about your fuel consumption? My fuel consumption with the defective water temperature sensor was very high but after replacement it was normal.
