Seeking 3200 manual

Hi All,
Just joined this forum in the hope that someone may have, or know of, a nice 3200 manual coming up for sale. I know how good these forum's can be for maintenance advice and banter so, on the basis a 3200 "may" have issues from time to time, I'd expect to be a regular thread contributor!

I test drove an X reg 3200 way back in 2003 and have hankered after one ever since but always gone for a financially safer option. Until now. Appreciate that autobox offers a less frenetic driving experience and a 4200 is considered more reliable but I like a manual box and the boomerang lights etc. Plan is to run it for a year or two as a second car and then move up to a Granturismo S when finances allow.

Ideally I'd like a 2001/2 car with the improved build quality but assume most of the shortcomings of earlier cars have been sorted by now (contactless throttle body upgrades etc.)? Condition and a comprehensive maintenance history more important for me than mileage and colour, but with a mileage low enough not to hamper resale. If a car is approaching 60k miles I'd rather buy one with 70k miles and the big timing chain service having been completed. I know I said colour not important, but do like blue, green or red with tan trim.

Looking for a fully sorted car, as I don't have the time for a project, that I can enjoy now and deal with future maintenance needs as they arise. I'm lucky in that Giallo in Tonbridge are not far from me, who I believe have a good reputation for servicing and repairs.

The silver car Richard Grace has would fit the bill nicely, but my budget is limited to the equivalent car at a private sale price! I'm happy to wait as long as needed for the right car, as it wont get used that much in the depths of winter, but at the same time I WANT ONE!

Welcome Pete, I have a late 2001 3200GT manual too...fantastic car, not easy to drive like a auto but amazing when everything comes together and bloody quick!

Try and buy the best you can afford, even if It's a couple K over budget, high miles is ok but not for selling on..

There lots of rubbish out there so take care

Welcome Pete.

Good luck with the search you seem to have a good idea of what you want and where to find it.

Peter.

Welcome along & good luck - the manual is the way to go. A bit of an industrial box but very positive and bullet proof - keep us posted

Good luck with the search. Make sure you look at a few to get a feel for what is actually good condition. People's idea of that seems to vary!

Welcome along. Not so sure the manual better, or more reliable than, the auto but can agree that the 32 in either format with the twins will bring more weekend smiles than the younger sisters ;)

Buy the silver car from Dickie. Even if it is £1k or £2k over budget, you'll be thankful in the end as it is a completely sorted car requiring no immediate exoenditure and, in all likelihood, low expenditure in your two years or so of ownership. It will be a cheaper and better option than buying a lesser car. Condition is everything, and no one sells cars in better condition than Richard.

With interests rates as low as they are, money is virtually free to borrow. So borrow some, and buy the best car that is currently available. Speak to Richard and do the deal.

Personally I'm not so sure that the low mileage garage queens, especially the ones at a dealer, are always the best.

In general I agree with buy the best you can afford, but I think if you look carefully you might be able to find a privately advertised car where an enthusiast has done lots of work, much of it preventative and out of "love".

My car was by far the best of 5 I looked at, and was a year prior sold by Richard Grace, but I feel it needs/deserves, quite a lot of small preventative jobs doing to it.

Personally I am more wary of a low mileage garage queen than one that is being used regularly.

My thoughts were confirmed (maybe it's a one off) when I visited an independent where a car similar to mine, but with just 20,000 miles on from new, had the engine out and the head gaskets were being replaced.

I wondered how often the coolant had been changed, how often had the engine been heat cycled etc etc....Electrolysis and general corrosion can play havoc no doubt.

I suppose my comments are linked to treating the 3200 as more of a "usable classic" than a daily driver prospect. As the cars get older, mileage become less relevant, and condition is king.

Good advise, it does look excellent

Interesting thread but to put the record straight the head gaskets on the 20k car weren’t to do with low mileage! It’s actually a long story which includes a chain of ‘reputable’ Maserati specialists both main dealer, independants and inspectors, some of which knew of a fault but where happy to pass it on (and contribute to this site)! Anyway to cut the story short and prevent any law suits the car had a head fault from manufacture and the main thing is that another Assetto Corsa is now fully restored, loved and on the road with the mileage building. Just be very careful where you buy one!

That's interesting. I was wrong!

Sorry, didn't mention any names, always wondered whose car it was.

I'd love to meet another AC on the roads near me :)

No problem at all I just thought I'd add the story!

I'm based up near Cambridge so keep an eye out on the M11!

good luck with your search, the auto and the manual are really two quite different cars i think, and there is definitely a marmite thing going on there when it comes to which one you prefer. get one that's been driven and loved, any car that's been ignored and treated like a normal car will have developed a long list of small and occasionally large problems.

My car is available details can be found below :

I love this one!

It's the third time its been up for sale this year, and every time I've had to be uncharacteristically restrained to not buy it. Given that Richard spent in the region of £4500 on it just a few months ago while preparing it for sale, the assumption is that it should make a very good buy for someone now.

If I was returning to a 3200, I would be all over that blue one - the colour works so well on that car
