Hi

I'm New in this game and I have just bought a 1991 430 that has been standing still since 1991. The first problem I found was the leaking shock absorbers. I want to replace them With coilovers but I'm struggling to find anything that matches. Does anyone have a Secret they want to share? I reckon there will be some minor modifications.

Hi Georg

Congratulations on your purchase, can you post some pictures?

Unfortunately you are a little limited when it comes to aftermarket suspension choices for Biturbos. Does your car have electronic suspension? Replacement units are very expensive at around £500 per corner but David Askew can rebuild them for reasonable prices (www.davidaskew.co.uk)

Standard shocks (non-electronic) can be rebuilt by companies such as Gaz (www.gazshocks.com) and I believe they can be uprated during the rebuild process if required.

If you really want coilovers they are going to be very expensive, somewhere in the region of £1800-200. Intrax in Holland (http://en.intraxracing.nl/merken/maserati/ghibli-series-ii/mas55051k2/) and HYR in Japan (http://www.hyracing.jp/mase-gibli-h.html) both make coilovers for the Ghibli II, I'm pretty sure they will also fit the 430 but wise to check first.

MIE in the USA may also be able to help, they have suitable rear Bilstein shocks but the inserts they list for the fronts are only for carb models (4 stud wheels) but they may be able to help as the 430 was sold in the US: https://www.maseratinet.com/c-676-suspension.aspx?pagenum=1

Hope that's of some use...

Hi

Thanks a lot, this was really what I was looking for. I have already sent an email to David Askew, hope he can help. Unfortunately I have cut the end of one of the cylinders to measure inside diameter and see if I could find a strut insert that fitted. It should be possible to weld it back I hope. Original rebuild will be just fine, this car will never be driven hard. I have a bimmer MC for such driving.
The car has only 71000 km and is as good as free of rust with exception of the door steps, under the aluminium covers. This will be welded and good as new. I suspect there will be a lot of surprises along the way, I take is as a challenge and look at this as my hobby. Parts are expensive so I will do my best to keep the cost as low as possible. This forum seem to be a perfect spot for such project. Rebuild is good as gold to me.
One more thing. The car has of course not been standing still since 1991, 1999 is correct. I will post some Pictures after cleaning up, now it looks like a total mess in there. Another correction is that hte car is actually a 1987 420i, partly rebuilt to 1991 430. Suspension, power steering, interior, rear bumper etc. I will need quite a few parts to have it Complete: front bumper, some steering parts (pump with bracket), exhaust, rear spoiler (racing), steering wheel (wooden), OZ Wheels (8x16) plus some other stuff.

Intrax are top quality, but top price. I have the HYR setup and it is also very good depending on the exchange rate and import duties - can also be more cost effective.
I've seen hyr fitted to biturbo and Ghibli.
If you have the koni adjustable units, they can be rebuilt too. I had some, but they sold on ebay last year.
Good luck

Eurospares lists them as To Order - Subject to Availability, it usually means No Longer Available. You could ask though.
