3200 Throttle body

Just removed TB and the sliding contacts are quite jerky. Freed them up by repeated opening & closing of the butterfly valve, but still a little erratic.

What I'd like to know: Does anyone on here know of a reputable & preferably well-priced reconditioner in Australia for the 3200 throttle body ?

I am in Melbourne. Thanks in anticipation of a flood of information ! :shy1:

Thought I'd temporarily fixed the problem by freeing up the opening of the butterfly valve. I seem to have destroyed the mechanism. Engine will only rev to 2000 rpm.

Does anyone have experience with the contactless endcaps sold by RTG Automotive thru their eBay shop. At 86 quid they are dirt cheap. And they claim their is no need to do an ECM upload after fitting to throttle body.

They are a pain to install and calibrate.
It requires drilling anti tamper goo, cut thick metal contacts, replace the endcaps, solder them and then trial and error to get the idle position right.

It will also not solve your problem as what you have is a corroded magnet which will need to be cleaned with a brush.
You can't use a metal brush as the magnet is ridiculously strong.

Don't do it, it's not worth the effort when it's so cheap to have the shed do it for you

For the benefit of all 3200Gt owners: I have discovered that the identical throttle body was used on Volvo cars of the same era and it suffers the same problems as ours. There is a vast amount of discussion on Volvo forums. However, the important thing is that there is an excellent service for contactless upgrade by Xemodex Technology in USA who repair & upgrade the 3200 TB without disturbing the stored data,so no reprogramming after repair needed. I have emailed them & will report on here how this works out.
Go to xemodex.com And the cost is just US$489

I had my Throttle body upgraded by Xemodex, a long time ago, probably 8 years, and its been great ever since. I had been told they had stopped doing it, but the web site suggests its still happening, which is great news. Based on my experience this is a great upgrade.

So is the contactless repair from Xemodex a superior repair compared to Maserati Shed?

I would have thought it would need to be a similar repair. Re the Volvo TBs, they are similar, but not identical on UK models. Their forums can be a wealth of knowledge as the faults are however the same.

Update on Xemodex : Can confirm they still repair & update the Maserati TB. I could not place an order on line because their system does not accept Australian postcodes, however,Xemodex customer service came back within 12 hours with a full quotation & a suggested workaround for placing the order online.
The quotation for repair is the same as on website,Can$489 Australian Priority shipping is Can$268.....Ouch ! So far brill service.

The online ordering is geoblocked,so I called Xemodex service and gave them my Visa details etc. Order was completed within 10 minutes and all documentation for Fedex emailed within 20 minutes. The documentation comes with very detailed instructions & a comprehensive Fault Symptoms Report. Cost so far is A$1 k. Faultless service so far.
Found this succint & clear explanation of the situation. Mine has gone into the limp home mode.

"There are two primary types of throttle position sensors (TPS): a potentiometer or a non-contact sensor Hall Effect sensor (magnetic device). A potentiometer is a satisfactory way for non-critical applications such as volume control on a radio, but as it has a wiper contact rubbing against a resistance element, dirt and wear between the wiper and the resistor can cause erratic readings. The more reliable solution is the magnetic coupling, which makes no physical contact, so will never be subject to failing by wear. This is an insidious failure as it may not provide any symptoms until there is total failure. All cars having a TPS have what is known as a 'limp-home-mode'. When the car goes into the limp-home-mode it is because the accelerator and engine control computer and the throttle are not talking to each other in a way that they can understand. The engine control computer shuts down the signal to the throttle position motor and a set of springs in the throttle set it to a fast idle, fast enough to get the transmission in gear but not so fast that driving may be dangerous."

Same type of repair, however xenmodex does that as their main business so quality might theoretically be higher.
On the other hand, the shed has the sd2 in case it's needed ...

I am not familiar with the work that is done at Maserati shed, so i cannot comment, but only say that the work Zemodex did on my throttle body looked well done, the unit was returned to me looking in near new condition, and has worked faultlessly for the last 8 years, so i have no complaints.

So is the contactless repair from Xemodex a superior repair compared to Maserati Shed?

Our local independent Maserati specialist has a new WiFi diagnostic computer that simulates SD2 and I have seen it working.

Xemodex use Fedex for deliveries. I gave the throttle body to our local Fedex Centre about 1300 hrs. in Melbourne,Australia on Wednesday. Estimated delivery at Ottawa,Canada is midday on Friday. I find that amazing. Two days door to door !!!!!

A mate of mine used Xemodex from France with great results, and the customer service was brilliant apparently..

It's just the shipping to Canada might put some people off

The way to a successful business is to exceed the customer's expectations. Xemodex have done that in spades.
The TB was returned within 6 days,Australia to Canada. The TB spent 4.5 hours at Xemodex,so it was repaired the same day as arrival (1145 hrs.) & picked up for return (1615 hrs.) Complete test & diagnosis report with unit. Amusingly they referred to a previous repair in 2008 by Injectronics in Melbourne as "unit tampered, attempt at repair". Unit was cleaned like new, free gasket supplied AND a free Xemodex baseball cap !
This quality of service just doesn't exist in Australia. And,why would I waste my time with that strange chap in the UK ?

The fault is described as a magnet touching a coil. This was apparent to me when I reomoved the TB from the car. The butterfly valve was sticking at various positions as if there was a lot of dirt in the mechanism.

I have a small Automotive business about 3 hrs NE of Melbourne and can refurb your TB provided there's nil damage to the electronic system. The main issue with these is the mechanical system and magnet components. I own a 3200 AC and have refurbed the TB with great results!

If I can help pm me?
