4200 shock absorbers

As I may need a new shock absorber I have been having a look around, and was wondering about the array of different part no's, a lot of which seem to overlap model years according to Eurospares. Does anybody know weather they are basically the same, just with different model no's, or are they actually built to different specs? the rears on mine are 197912 (of which I cant find any second hand ones) which are listed on eurospares as being suitable for 2003/2004/2005 coupe, spyder & gransport Any thoughts anyone?:conf4:

Is there anyone who rebuilds skyhook ones? seem to recall that there isn't, but I may be wrong.

They certainly used to as I had their specific refurb. page bookmarked. It went to a 404 - page not found a while ago though.
Maybe worth an email to them to be certain. Or David Askew as above.

Besides - what is the consensus of opinion for changing just one shock? Apart from expense considerations have always thought it best practise to replace in pairs. For example, the Spyder I looked at a while ago had recently had a single shock changed. At a known specialist too. It was a owner supplied part though which had caused me concern. I did wonder though if the garage would have agreed to replaced just one if there was undue risk involved.

I just rebuilt the front Skyhook shocks for my 3200 at Bilstein Germany for a reasonable price. Of course I am aware that the 4200 has a different technology. Still I am confident that Bilstein offers the same service for the 4200 shocks. Normal refurbishments of Oil, Gas and Seals should be around 180€/shock. At mine the adjustment was broken which cost another 200€ for the main rod. Apparently only because the small adjusting gear was broken and not available as spare part with them. I know the gear is available at Hill Engineering but I thought there was more broken inside which was not the case. You may contact Jan.Fork(et)thyssenkrupp.com for inquiries.

Pretty sure the 4200 does not have Bilstein shocks for a start :) (I thought they were Sachs, but could well be misremembering) I discussed this with David. Part of the issue is that the cylinder is rolled over the end cap to make the seal. The equipment to take that apart was costly. David was also offering 3200 shock refurb

Of course, if Greg is doing them, happy days. Pretty sure he is as well as ha advertises exchange on ebay

I think you're right. There was a thread a few months ago about this. As above though the PPCP page has gone and haven't seen the refurb. listing on eBay for a while either. It was about £450 ish + p&p iirc. Have sent an email to them about an unrelated matter and have asked about the shock service.

A quick update from Greg at PPCP re: their shock refurbishment service:

"as for shock refurbs, we do them in batches not individually as the process makes it uneconomical to do them individually ....
... we took the page from the website as all enquiries we were getting were for individually shocks to be refurbed, so now we just use Ebay as and when we have batches processed, hope that helps.
Kind regards,
Greg Smith."
