Ouch, that's a decent repair bill, well done for seeing it through, i also had one bad period with the car which resulted in a 12k repair bill, it can be scary. The performance hike you are feeling, could be that old myth about the valve timing being deliberately off to remove some power under direction from Ferrari? So when you put it right it produces more power. Did you put it on a rolling road before and after? would have been interesting. There are documented cases on here of 3200's producing in the region of 410 HP in stock condition, so they can be pretty quick if the engines right. I always thought about checking and setting the valve timing, i may put it on my retirement to do list :)

Interesting comments regarding cost of engine rebuild. As an ex 996 owner, you kind of just budget for the possibility. If you are able to sort out the inherent weakness in the engine through the rebuild then it can add some value, although not all of it.
To put it into perspective, replacing the crankshaft of a Rotax 582 two stroke engine will not leave you much change from £3K. A partial engine rebuild from Hartech will be around £10K for a 996. The joy of owning older exotica. I change cars a lot, and depreciation on a new car makes this kind of cost look quite reasonable - hence I'm skint all the time!!!

Yes Rex, plus the chains although they didn't need replacing... the timing was way out too

Luckily for me when I started collecting the parts about 12 months ago for the rebuild most of the stuff were still available
unlike today unfortunately.

So you provided some the parts , big end and main bearing shells. The figure stating with 7 was labour I presume, takes a lot of hours to strip , clean and reface 32 valves and seats, as well as adjusting clearances. Worth it though 3200 will be worth the money but it will take a few more years.

I supplied most of the parts Rex, including the oversize thrust washers that don't officially exist!

I recon a nice low miles 3200 manual gearbox car complete with provenance, engine rebuild and lots of other stuff is the sort of car that'll wash it's face in a couple of years time..

I have known people spend more on a Vauxhall engine for a Ford Escort Rally car for it to only last a couple of events.

Having done major work on these cars they are labour intensive and there are no short cuts.
We all no the parts are expensive when we got into bed with Maserati.
Good on you Dave for giving yours the treatment you did.
