Clutch wear and replacement costs

Great thread! Here's another angle. Currently looking at a facelift 4200 which has been inspected and looks good, most of the big ticket items replaced and apparently drives like a dream. I've done some research and ascertained that the car last had a replacement clutch 25000 miles ago and is currently indicating 72% wear. Should this fact inform value of the car? I'm really interested and the owner has been totally up front and a good guy, but concerned about an impending £3K bill.

A car with a 72% worn clutch is definitely worth a little less than an otherwise identical one with a new clutch. But it's impossible to find "identical" Maserati's for sale, so you just have to make a judgement call. Of course, the same applies to the brakes, tyres and all other wear items.

When I bought my Spyder it had 70% wear on the clutch it lasted 2 years and over 10k miles before it was replaced. Just factor it into the price

Makes sense. What about service intervals? It's been roughly serviced in line with Mileage but with huge gaps in terms of annual visits. Annually serviced over last three years and at the beginning, but missed around 5 services in the middle. Currently at 60,000 miles. Would this impact on value? Sorry for hijacking the thread!!

Most 4200s don't do high annual milages and therefore should be serviced annually, normally you have a small service followed by the larger service the following year and so on. If the car has been serviced annually in the last 3 years check for both service types.

Once again factor into the price

Yes, they need an annual service or at least annual oil / filter change if annual mileage is very low. Might be hard to sell on if your ownership is short term.

Make sure underside and subframes are both in good condition - rust!

Perhaps the guys who inspected the car can give you a summay recommendation on all these missing stamps, clutch wear etc.
I accept the experiences stated here about clutch wear and replacement date, but if the car had a new clutch it would be more attractive than one that had not had that done. Presumably the guys doing the inspection are marque specialists and will have checked for rust, wishbones and isn't there something about leaking heater matrix that is shed load expensive fix because of the labour time involved?

A car is a complete package that needs to be assessed as a whole. Clutch wear is one part but the guys who did the inspection can tell you if its a good 'un worth opening up your wallet for?
